Apple: Celebrity photo leaks not result of iCloud breach

Claims victims were hit by 'very targeted' attack

Apple has issued a new follow-up statement on this week's celebrity photo leaks via iCloud. "After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet," the company writes. "None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple's systems including iCloud or Find My iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved."

At least some of the photos were clearly shot with non-Apple devices, which would support the company's statement that no hacking of iCloud or its servers occurred. The statement concludes with Apple urging people to use a strong password, and turn on two-step verification.

The FBI is currently investigating the leaks. A number of high-profile celebrities have fallen victim, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Hillary Duff.

I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for "stars" who take naked or compromising photos of themselves and put them on any outside storage. What are they thinking? They could have just as easily lost the phone and the pictures contained to some other deviant. I do support the FBI cracking down hard on the hackers in principal.

I have sympathy so long as it was not an intentional leak. I think this teaches us all an important lesson, but let's not forget that corporations beg us to put our trust in our hands. Clearly, these "celebrities" did so, and were betrayed in doing so.

Having said that, I suspect that the vulnerability is more with Dropbox, not Apple.

    Stop blaming the victims.

People can take all the photos they want, nude or clothed or whatever. Unless they want others to see them, others have no right to see them.
