AMD ships three eight-core FX processors based on Piledriver

updated 11:46 am EDT, Tue September 2, 2014

New chips have no GPU, boast low price and light thermal load

Chip manufacturer AMD has launched a trio of new eight-core FX processors, based on the older Piledriver architecture. Released today are the FX-8370 and FX-8370E which peak at 4.3GHz, as well as the 4GHz FX-8320E. All three chips buck industry trends and don't have an onboard graphical processing unit.

The FX-8370 has 8MB of both L2 and L3 cache, with 125W TDP and runs at 4.0GHz, with 4.3GHz "turbo" speed. The FX-8370E also peaks at 4.3GHz, but normally runs at 3.3GHz, with a TDP of 95W.

The FX-8320E runs at 3.2GHz, with a peak of 4.0GHz, and also boasts 8MB of L2 and L3 cache. Like the FX-8370E, the FX-8320E has a lower TDP of 95W.

While the "Steamroller" architecture is in most of AMD's new chips, the older "Piledriver" has fewer thermal limits, opening up the potential for eight chips. Piledriver is just over two years old at this point.

The FX-8370 and FX-8370E retail for $200. The FX-8320E sells for $147. All three chips are available at retail today.
