Microsoft mistakenly teases Windows 9 in China

updated 06:57 am EDT, Tue September 2, 2014

Weibo posting about Windows 9 Start Menu quickly pulled from view

Microsoft's Chinese business arm may have jumped the gun, by mistakenly promoting Windows 9 too early. The company's regional Weibo account reportedly put an image up promoting the next iteration of Microsoft's operating system along with a question hinting at the Start Menu, a posting which has since been removed from view.

CNBeta noticed the alleged image, which used angled squares representing Live Tiles to create the number nine, with The Verge claiming it was accompanied by a statement asking "do you think the Start Menu at the bottom left will make a come back?" The post is the first promotional message from Microsoft about the operating system, albeit deleted, with the company currently expected to launch the Technology Preview version on September 30th.

Aside from the Start Menu, which is believed to be split vertically to include Live Tiles, Windows 9 is rumored to include the ability to load Metro-style apps in windows rather than in fullscreen or snapped views, and could potentially include a desktop equivalent of the Cortana digital assistant from Windows Phone.

That 9 looks ugly. And by my count there are 12 windows, not 9.
