Samsung finally officially launches Galaxy Note Edge phone

updated 09:52 am EDT, Wed September 3, 2014

Device, teased for months, has independent 'edge' screen

Alongside the new Galaxy Note 4 "phablet," Samsung also unveiled the often-teased Galaxy Note Edge smartphone. As previously expected, the Edge has a pair of screens, with the "edge" screen extending all the way to the edge of the case.

The Galaxy Note Edge has an unnamed 2.7GHz quad-core processor, and a 5.6-inch QuadHD+ Super AMOLED display at 2560x1440 (160ppi). It runs Android 4.4 Kit Kat, optimized for the Samsung S Pen. Storage is either 64GB or 32GB, depending on configuration, with a microSD slot boosting storage up to 64GB. The device boasts 3GB of RAM.

The edge screen is a discrete display, and configurable by the user. Additionally, notifications can be displayed on just the edge screen, saving battery life.

Connectivity is WiFi 802.11AC, with GPS, GLONASS, and Beidou location support. Bluetooth 4.1 with low-power provides short range connectivity, and also powers near-field communication. Video out is provided by MHL 3.0, with input provided by USB 2.0. The phone supports nearly all networks, but does not support "5G" like the Note 4 does.
