Update for Lumia devices will include 4K video capture, Dynamic Flash
Microsoft has detailed the version of the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 heading onto its Lumia smartphones. On top of the expected new additions, including wider resolution support, Live Folders, and the Cortana virtual assistant, the Lumia Denim update includes some Lumia-specific extras, with the majority of new features relating to photography, though some functions are said to be dependent on the phone's hardware.
The new Lumia Camera app adds more control over a photograph, such as automatic HDR and Dynamic Flash, with improved algorithms said to help create clearer low-light shots. Microsoft demonstrated these at IFA, showing how a subject in a dark photo could be brightened as if the camera used a flash, with the option to select how much brighter the person or object can be. A Moment Capture mode is also being introduced, adding 4K video capture at 24fps to the phones.
Cortana be activated by the voice command "Hey Cortana," similar to the "OK Google" prompt on some Android devices, while a new Glance Screen will show details from Bing Weather and Bing Health and Fitness as well as normal phone notifications.
The update will be shipping onboard the Lumia 830, Lumia 730 Dual SIM, and Lumia 735, with other Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices expected to receive the update starting from the fourth quarter of 2014.
