Acer's Interact Event : November 23, 2010

10:59 - Event is about to begin. Acer's CEO is here.

11:05 - Acer's CEO De Lanci is up. Says the company is "hungry like models." (It's taking place on a fashion catwalk)

11:09 - Talking about how tablets have different requirements for content consumption. Tablets are going to be a "very exciting world."

11:22 - Acer has five devices new today: one of these is a notebook with two LCDs. Two 14-inch screens. You can use one for window management.

11:25 - It's Iconia: lets you edit gestures, change settings, more. Automatically recognizes the context you're in and will pop up a keyboard. Web browser is unique; it's a touch browser that lets you select an area to zoom in on.

11:26 - Acer is going to offer an SDK for the Iconia interface in late December, VP Jim Wong says.

11:28 - Next: a 10-inch convertible Windows 7 tablet. Thin tablet display, but a keyboard attachment for "serious typing."

11:31 - Next: a 10-inch Android tablet. 1280x800 screen, HDMI output. Running a game but looks to be Android 2.2.

11:33 - Launching in April. Dual-core 1GHz processor, 5MP back camera, HD front cam.

11:37 - Next: 7-inch and 4.8-inch tablets. 7-inch has the same 1280x800 resolution, dual 1.2GHz processors, also due in April. 4.8-inch: 1024x480 resolution, 8MP cam with 720p recording, 1.3MP front, six-axis gyroscope.

11:40 - Clear.fi media sharing: download to one and others get it. Movies, music and (seemingly) games. Just need a Wi-Fi router. Share to Facebook, Flickr and YouTube from a custom interface.

11:41 - Sources on the left, destination on the right, content itself in the middle. Social sites can be both, though not always.

11:43 - The Aspire Revo is used as an example of how clear.fi could work: hook it up and share content to your TV.

11:45 - Talking Acer's new store next.

11:47 - Alive is the name of the store. Good product is tied into your personality, impacting your experience, your everyday interaction with the world.

11:49 - People are losing their relationship with their devices. Used to be able to go to a music store and get recommendations; can't do that now. [Same issue with apps, presumably]

11:51 - The store's importance will be that it's real-time.

11:57 - Listen, watch, read, play, get apps. Can sort by categories. Not sure where Acer is getting that it's unique. Can group any kind of content for a given subject regardless of format. Lady Gaga for an example: music, videos, books, games.

11:58 - Purchases are stored in the cloud, so you can access them wherever you are.

11:59 - The more you use Alive, the better it gets at recognizing what you like. Not really different than Genius in iTunes.

12:01 - 2,000 movies from top Hollywood studios, over 15,000 music videos and eight million songs. "Thousands" of books, news publishers, newspapers, magazines and thousands of casual games.

12:02 - Initial content providers: 7digital, Acetrax, Adobe, APogeo, AudioGo, CMS, Intel, Kowalski, Zinio, La Republica, Muzu.TV, URRA...

12:03 - Alive launches in Italy and the UK on December 20 for Windows 7. Launching in the Americas, Asia and several European countries in spring. Cross-device and platform by the end of winter.

12:05 - Quick demo of Alive on the 10-inch tablet. Q&A time. Will older Acer devices have access to the store? 2009 devices with DLNA should.

12:06 - An idea of how many tablets you want to sell? The operating system isn't under our control. Depends on Android [release schedules].

12:07 - May have an Android tablet in February/March. Don't want to put out Android with a phone OS. [i.e. waiting on Android 3.0, Honeycomb]

12:10 - All tablets will be under Acer badge at first; Gateway later. Talking about DLNA meshing with Alive's content; trying to make it an open platform.

12:12 - Talking tablet size: Lanci. Says 7-inch is good solution for replacing e-books. 10-inch is different. We'll see who is going to be competition [in the future].

12:15 - Any Chrome OS things in fall or winter? Google has its "own agenda." They've said they'll do something in December, but things still aren't changing.

12:17 - Pricing? Haven't decided to announce the price yet.

12:18 - Do the tablets have names? Work needs to be done in the next few weeks on naming. Only the Iconia notebook has its name so far.

12:23 - It's a first generation of devices with things like Iconia. Need to learn. Any plans for Windows Phone 7? Unclear, but sounds like it. Liquid Metal phone in the US? AT&T and T-Mobile discussing, but nothing definite. Rogers in Canada.

12:24 - On Lenovo: notes that market is moving from Western to Eastern. Lots is going to come [to both of us] because of increasing users in the area. It's a different game.

12:33 - Event wrapping up.
