Facebook Event : April 04, 2013
Facebook's Android announcement.

12:59 - The event is scheduled to begin at 10am Pacific, 1pm Eastern.

1:05 - The event has begun, starting off with Mark Zuckerberg "finally talking about that Facebook phone."

1:07 - Zuckerberg starts off by focusing on Facebook's phone angle. "What would it feel like if our phones were designed around people, not apps."

1:08 - "Today's phones are designed around apps, not people, and we want to flip that around."

1:09 -

1:10 - Zuckerberg notes that, even if Facebook were to build a phone, it would only address a small fraction of the market, so "we're not building a phone, and we're not building an operating system."

1:11 - The company has instead looked to change the Facebook experience, using Android as a flexible platform. "You don't need to fork Android" to pull off a deeper level of integration, Zuckerberg says.

1:12 - The new experience is called "Facebook Home."

1:14 - From the home screen, users can flip through posts (cover feed), double tap to like a post, without diving into an app.

1:15 - Notifications are listed alongside the face of the contact, with swipe gestures to control lists.

1:17 - The company has also focused on messaging, eliminating the need to bring up separate apps to switch from Facebook to text messaging.

1:17 -

1:17 - The messaging feature is called "chat heads."

1:18 - Adam Mosseri, product director, takes the stage to do live demos.

1:19 -

1:19 - Open graph posts with large images are presented in full-screen on the home page. Cover photos are also used as background for text posts, darkened for contrast with the white text.

1:20 - The UI "relies heavily on simple gestures."

1:21 - The notifications focus on the most important content, such as personal messages, rather than flooding the interface with all posts.

1:22 - Pressing and holding the profile pic provides three options, including a messaging utility, an app launcher and direct link to the Facebook app.

1:23 - Joey Flynn takes over to talk about messaging.

1:24 -

1:24 - "You should be able to talk to your friend, no matter where you are in your phone, no matter what app."

1:25 -

1:25 - Small "chat head" icons pop up in any app, showing a small profile pic from the sender and a number for the number of waiting messages.

1:27 - Green buttons and bubbles represent SMS messages, shown alongside Facebook posts for a seamless experience.

1:27 - Closing an individual chat can be accomplished by swipe gesture.

1:28 - "The most fun and delightful messaging experience yet."

1:28 - Corey Ondrejka is the next on stage.

1:29 - Android users will be prompted to try Home once, or use it full-time. It will be available for tablets and smartphones, however the tablet variant is not expected for "several months."

1:30 - "Every month, home is going to ... have more features."

1:30 - Making an OS or forking Android "is not the way to do this."

1:31 - "If you're going to make a really deep, immersive experience on Android, this is how to do it."

1:32 - Mark Zuckerberg steps back on stage to wrap up the event.

1:35 - The app will be available April 12 via Google Play.

1:36 - The company has launched "Facebook Home Program" to work directly with phone manufacturers for optimized experience.

1:37 - AT&T's Ralph de la Vega and HTC's Peter Chou take the stage.

1:37 - Borne of the partnership, HTC is introducing the "First"

1:38 -

1:38 - The phone comes with the Facebook Home experience preloaded.

1:39 - Four colors will be available, including blue, white and red.

1:41 - De la Vega: "It's not designed to be a big phone, it's designed to feel good to you."

1:41 - The phone will support AT&T's LTE network.

1:42 - The phone will ship on April 12 exclusively through AT&T for $100 with a new contract.

1:42 - Pre-orders begin today at att.com/facebookhome

1:43 -

1:45 - The event has come to a conclusion.
