LG Mobile World Congress 2011 Event : February 14, 2011
| |
5:56 - Jong-seok Park talking smartphone history: there were very few operating systems. Will talk about a premium lineup that sets new standards.
| |
5:58 - Four new trends: multi-core smartphones. As apps get more complicated, performance is more important. LG Optimus 2X an example.

| |
5:59 - Display innovation: must be brighter. Optimus Black is an example.
| |
6:00 - Mobile 3D: The era of the true 3D mobile has arrived. Optimus 3D creates a new beginning. Easy to see without glasses.

| |
6:01 - True tablet war: "Major shift in the tablet market." Will continue to grow in new and diverse ways. Some companies focus on productivity at the expense of portability, while others do the reverse.
| |
6:01 - LG is creating a new beginning. Creating a new lineup. 2011 will be the year LG is a key contender in the smartphone space.
| |
6:02 - Euro Product Marketing Director Daniel Hernandez up. Talking smartphone speed evolution: Manufacturers have been trying to introduce higher clock speeds to keep up. 1GHz dual-core processor raises the bar again.

| |
6:02 - Optimus 3D is the first dual-channel, dual-core, dual-memory phone. Promo video gives a very top-level overview: 4.3-inch screen, dual 3D cameras. Techniques to minimize battery life.
| |
6:02 - [Correction: maximize battery life]
| |
6:03 - Shows just how fast it is: Quadrant benchmark puts it it at 2958 (well faster than others). Faster website loading too.

| |
6:03 - Hernandez now talking 3D. Shows a promo video of usage cases for 3D: talking to the family, buying a car or checking out how exercise is done "for real." Deliberately cheesy and a bit of a stretch.
| |
6:06 - He admits these situations aren't entirely real, but they're no longer just an idea. But what does 3D mobile mean?

| |
6:06 - Autostereoscopic 3D without glasses. Self-created content is important. Converts 2D to 3D. Cameras are 24mm apart. Users can watch 3D even as they're recording it.
| |
6:07 - Optimus 3D could act as a content for a 3D mobile industry.
| |
6:08 - Talking a strategic partnership with YouTube for 3D. YouTube up: We believe the 3D ecosystem needs a catalyst. Users want an easier experience to capture and view their 3D content.

| |
6:09 - Dedicated hotkey for 3D content. Interface called 3D Hotzone. Helps you find games, movies and more.

| |
6:11 - Optimus Pad next.
| |
6:11 - There's a "flood" of tablets coming out next. 30 different companies with 45 different tablets (note: this is actually low). Is this a new category of device? Are we here to stay? Internally, the answer is yes. A tablet needs a maximum of productivity.
| |
6:13 - A number of tablets have "significant drawbacks." Some are just blown up phones: attacking the Galaxy Tab. Some are too big to be portable: attacking the iPad. The Optimus Pad is the "tablet standard."

| |
6:14 - Three pillars of the Optimus Pad: productivity performance, advanced multimedia, and designed for portabiliy (P A D).
| |
6:15 - Android 3.0. Touch response is also optimized. Mostly recapping core features like books.

| |
6:15 - Advanced multimedia comes through the full HD and a 3D camera similar to the Optimus 3D. Two five-megapixel cameras on the back for 3D. HDMI 1.4 for output to a TV.
| |
6:17 - Portability: 8.9 inches is the optimal size for portability. Criticizes the iPad for being too big in portrait mode, and the Galaxy Tab for being too small in landscape. The iPad is also too heavy; the Optimus Pad is light enough to be held in one hand.

| |
6:18 - No compromise like the Galaxy Tab: see the full web page.
| |
6:18 - Live Optimus Pad demo: we've been recording you in 3D the entire time, and you'll be able to see it on YouTube. Showing Google Talk: we can't hear the other end, but it works.

| |
6:19 - Q&A session: Jong-seok Park back up with co-workers.
| |
6:19 - How does 3D affect battery life? Hernandez: the dual architecture is optimized to minimize battery consumption. Battery life is better than most devices.
| |
6:20 - When and at what price? Europeans: Optimus 3D in most carrier stores from May, Optimus Pad in April. Not able to disclose prices, they vary by country.

| |
6:20 - Non-sequitur: commentary on the Microsoft-Nokia relationship? "Not a good idea" to comment on a partnership. There must be some rationale, and I believe we're going continue to work together.
| |
6:20 - Optimus 3D resolution, capture and bitrate? 800x480 wide VGA. Resolution 720p in 3D, 1080p in 2D. TI OMAP 4430 processor inside.
| |
6:21 - Frequency support for N. America versus Europe for the Optimus Black? Acting defensive: suggests that it would give away carrier launch plans.
| |
6:21 - Processor differences? Optimus Pad uses the Tegra 2, not the OMAP 4430.

| |
6:21 - YouTube 3D deal exclusive? Certain element and features are exclusive. Can't say what those are.
| |
6:22 - Continuing to develop the technical side (hardware) further, but also the operating system. Those are the targets for the future.
| |
6:22 - Plans to target these at the enterprise market? Battlefield of the smartphone is open. Our market segmentation will become more complex and accurate. The phones up today are "three brothers" that each have their own traits. Spent quite a lot of time investigating the size of the tablet, too. One of the examples of investigating consumer segmentation.
| |
6:22 - Show ended -- unfortunately, no hands-on here. All the attention is at the booth at the main MWC venue.
