Microsoft E3 Keynote : June 14, 2010
Live from Los Angeles

1:30 - Still waiting for the show to start. As usual, at least a little bit late.

1:32 - Getting underway. Leading off with Modern Warfare: Black Ops trailer.

1:35 - New Xbox 360 "swoosh" image -- a sign of possible Xbox 360 changes? Showing gameplay of Black Ops.

1:37 - Possible to be a helicopter gunner, as shown by a Mi-24 Hind; good graphics for an Xbox 360 (now almost 5 years old).

1:38 - This looks like it'll be very fun -- much like the snowmobile chases in Modern Warfare 2.

1:41 - Don Mattrick up on stage after the gameplay demo. Microsoft has an exclusive with downloadable content for Activision games from Black Ops (Nov. 9) through to 2012.

1:41 - It's a year of transformation. Announcing Microsoft Kinect (which we saw overnight).

1:45 - All about showing, not telling; bringing on Konami's Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear). Decided to create something new to show it off. Shigenobu Matsuyama (younger developer) showing off Zan-Datsu: "cut and take" in Japanese.

1:47 - It's Raiden from MGS -- you have direct control over his blade. Fun end bit where Raiden slices watermelons.

1:48 - Microsoft: every game from here on in with the E3 conference is exclusive to X360. Cliff Bleszinski of Epic is onstage for a live Gears of War 3 co-op demo.

1:52 - Four-player co-op here. Showing charging oponents with the Lancer and enemy Lambents, nasty characters that can kill some (AI) players instantly.

1:53 - New gameplay mode known as Beast to be shown at the E3 show floor.

1:54 - Peter Molyneux up on stage to show Fable III. From revolutionary to ruler "and beyond." Ships October 26.

1:56 - A gameplay trailer here, not a demo. But it shows ship combat and the 18th-century look.

1:58 - Quick game trailer followed by Halo Reach and Bungie's Marcus Leto.

1:59 - Reach's single-player campaign up for a glimpse; game ships this September.

2:02 - Like promised, Reach's graphics are considerably better than Halo 3. More background detail and just overall detail. Grenade launcher weapon on show.

2:04 - Stealth takedowns work in single-player, not just multiplayer. Working towards a special Sabre spacecraft you can control.

2:05 - Kinect makes Xbox Live easier: no barriers, no learning curves.

2:08 - Finally, a Kinect demo. Just have to wave at the console to jump in; it recognizes your face. Go into the Kinect Hub with another wave and you get to a hub with friendly apps, like Netflix and Zune.

2:09 - Playing Alice in Wonderland from the Zune Marketplace: you can bring your hands up to get a timeline and scroll back or forth. Voice commands work with play or pause.

2:10 - At the hub, you can go straight to music by asking "Xbox, play music." Has a much more Zune-like music interface. Also works with Facebook, Last.fm, Sky and other features. Every country gets the features.

2:14 - Video Kinect is the video chat app. It can reach to Xbox Live and Windows Live Messenger apps. You can share news, movies and music between video chatters.

2:15 - Kinect has motorized tilt, so it can follow you if you move in the room.

2:16 - ESPN tie-in: you can now watch over 3,500 live and recorded events.

2:20 - ESPN SportsCenter's hosts on stage. Most features will be in HD; has a custom interface much like 1 vs. 100. You can vote for favorite teams, including with your voice. You can also cue up instant replays, answer polls and other features.

2:23 - Kuno Tsunoda on stage. Talking about interaction like you would the real world.

2:25 - Introducing six Kinect games: Kinectimals up first. Playing with a pet tiger that lets you rub it and play. You can tell it to get up, sit, jump and other tasks. It learns as you play. You can even hide.

2:27 - Kinect Sports up next, from Rare. You can play with the stadium crowd before you play.

2:29 - You can run in place for a track event.

2:30 - Other events are other olympic-style sports: tennis, boxing, long jump, beach volleyball.

2:32 - Kinect Joyride: redefining kart racing. You can put your hands in a virtual steering wheel position and do stunts in mid-air with your hands. Voice commands for boost.

2:33 - Kinect Adventures next: games like Reflext Ridge, where you ride a trolley and have to jump, duck or grab to move on or get medals.

2:34 - The Adventures take pictures of you while you shoot, so you can remember what you were doing while you were playing.

2:36 - River Rush up next; same concept with navigating rapids. Two-player mode means you have to work together to turn or jump.

2:36 - KA lets you share your experiences to Facebook.

2:36 - Other Kinect games from third-parties coming up.

2:40 - Ubisoft's Your Shape up: a physical exercise game with boxing, running and other activities. Even in the menu, you're genuinely in the game. It will measure your body and base the entire menu system around the distance.

2:40 - Your Shape is divided into gym, martial arts and other categories.

2:42 - It can provide feedback on your results in every activity. Very slick. You can have competitive games, too.

2:44 - Zen classes: you can do slow meditation moves.

2:46 - Harmonix' Dance Central up next: like a rhythm game, but all about dance moves cued directly to your body. Coming in the holiday. Technology hasn't existed to do a dance game like this until now.

2:47 - Lots of tracks in the game, DLC afterwards. Authentic choreography with over 600 moves and 90 routines, including some based on actual dances from music videos.

2:49 - Break It Down mode: each move is done one-at-a-time until you master them and can string them together. Those who aren't coordinated can start out relatively simply.

2:50 - Kinect launches in North America on Novmeber 4. Broad lineup of 15 games, works with all Xbox 360s.

2:52 - Star Wars: use a lightsaber and Force powers with your hands.

2:54 - Realistic racing this time: Forza Motorsport variant that lets you drive around a stream of cars by making steering motions with your hands.

2:55 - In previews, you can literally walk around a car, kneel down to look at details and get presentations when you trigger certain points.

2:56 - You can even get inside a car to look at its interior.

2:57 - Don Mattrick up again; calling it a "brand new era."

3:00 - New Xbox 360! Exactly as advertised. Smaller, quiet, built-in 250GB hard drive and 802.11n Wi-Fi. Costs the same $299. Shipping today! Arrives this week, unless you're in the audience... then you get one for free today.

3:00 - Keynote is over.

6:22 - Western Digital has updated its WD TV Live Media Player by releasing its successor. Like the original, the new player has a USB 2.0 slot for thumb drives, external drives or PCs, along with an HDMI port to connect it to TVs. New features include DLNA and Bonjour support, letting users access their home networks and stream multimedia via the Ethernet ...
