Nintendo E3 2011 Keynote : June 07, 2011

11:48 - Waiting for things to start. As we've mentioned, the official Wi-Fi is flaky (despite Nintendo's insistence people use it), so updates may be sporadic.

12:02 - Just past 9AM, hasn't yet started. Photos may not be frequent given the poor connection quality; Nintendo didn't really know how to handle the load here.

12:07 - And it's starting. Live orchestra performing the main Zelda theme while we go through a montage of scenes from the Zelda games.

12:11 - Lights up as we mark the Zelda 25th anniversary. Shigeru Miyamoto is up. Talking about how music is an indispensable part of the Zelda experience. Link has often used a musical instrument.

12:17 - Link's Awakening the first Gameboy Color game in the eShop for the 3DS. Unbridled creativity. Ocarina of Time 3D showing next week. Frame rates improved, graphics revamped. Special modes.

12:17 - DSi: Four Swords will be available as a free DSiWare download. Hope you'll gather all of your friends together.

12:26 - Gold Wii remote coming; new soundtracks for Ocarina/Skyward and concerts.

12:27 - How are we going to make the new platform? Deeper game experiences, and even wider appeal than before as well. Full details for a little later this morning, but want you to understand that the goal is to serve every player. Distinct gaming history. New console is something to look forward to next year.

12:30 - Montage of games coming to the 3DS, including a new Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart and more. Reggie Fils-Aime is up: we're aiming to appeal to what people want but something new.

12:32 - Starfox is back: this time, though, you can either use traditional controls or tilt the control itself. Cameras record reactions of others during multiplayer matches. Arrives in stores this September.

12:44 - Super Mario 3D is coming before the year is over. Kid Icarus: Uprising gets a demo. It has multiplayer fighting both on the ground and in the air, and it supports AR cards. Montage of third-party games next: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Cave Story, and others.

12:48 - One more thought: people liked the Wii name once they knew it meant We, but our new platform should be all about you. "Wii U" is the new name. Is it unique, unifying, maybe utopia? Answer is yes. Brand new controller. Infinitely complex and yet perfectly simple. Change the way you game personally, how you interact with family and friends.

12:53 - Wii U lets you play games on the device, take them off the TV. Use them in tandem with other controllers. Browse the web and video chat. Won't have to interrupt your gameplay when you play a TV. Backwards compatible with Wii games, including accessories like the Wii Balance Board. Dual analog sticks, front camera, microphone. Widest variety of games can be supported. Play games very intuitively.

12:56 - Not designed to be portable, but has traits like it. Broadcasts wireless HD with low latency. Play games only on the Wii U or on two screens at the same time. Decided on this because we want a strong bond between games, you, and the Internet. You, your friends, and your family. Web browsing can share photos and videos. Video chat, even while watching TV.

12:58 - Looking at making a new Super Smash Bros. game for both the 3DS and Wii U. Shouldn't go into any detail today since they're still working on it, but it's in development and will see the platforms work together.

1:04 - We're providing tangible proof it'll change the way you play games. They're eight experiences; interactive demonstrations, not prototypes. An example of one now: a bird in Japan flying between cherry blossom trees. Gorgeous water reflections and effects; this is clearly much more powerful than the Wii.

1:10 - Others: new Super Mario concept game where you can follow on either of the screens. Shield Pose: pirate arrows come at you and you have to move the controller to block them. Four-player concept that lets you try to escape others chasing you with the Wii remote. Different perspective on the Wii U screen than others. Space shooter concept too. One game that's definitely coming: Lego City Stories.

1:12 - Core, WB, Namco Bandai, Irrational, all talk about their experience. Ken Levine of Irrational says you're getting a full console experience in bed. Darksiders II to hit the console at launch. Tekken coming to Nintendo for the first time. New Batman game. New Assassin's Creed. New Ghost Recon. Aliens: Colonial Marines. Tekken, Ninja Gaiden 3.

1:15 - We're getting hands-on experiences with the systems right outside the theatre. Head-start on the show floor.

1:18 - Show's over! Time for a hands-on with the Wii U.
