Apple guilty of infringing patents in Mobilemedia lawsuit

A court has ruled Apple and the iPhone guilty of infringing three patents belonging to Mobilemedia, Bloomberg is reporting via its Twitter feed. The patents relate to features like cover screen rotation; few other details of the ruling have been disclosed yet, but the outcome may have some strategic importance. Mobilemedia is in fact a joint venture between Sony, Nokia, and a Denver-based patent licenser, MPEG LA.
Apple has enjoyed a mostly positive track record when it comes to patent cases, making today's loss unusual. The company will likely file for an appeal, since conceding the patents to Mobilemedia could lend ammunition not just to Sony and Nokia, but to companies considering or currently involved in patent lawsuits with Apple.

If Apple already holds patents on these "technologies" then it would seem to be the Patent Office's fault for not catching this when Apple first applied. The Patent Office should be held liable when these things occur, not the patent holder(s).
