Canadian proposal to tax blank media

A Wired article entitled "Tariff on Blank CDs? Blame Canada" brings to light a proposed bill that would issue a tax on blank CD-R/Ws ($.59 per disk), memory cards ($.08 per megabyte) and blank DVDs ($2.27 per disk). Also affected by the possible tax are manufacturers of MP3 players, who would be paying $21 for each gigabyte of memory available on the device. An anti-proposal site shows a comparision of what the media costs now to what it will cost if the proposal passes -- which is doubtful according to legal experts.

    Respond NOW!

    Fellow Canadians (and neighbours).

Respond to the proposal and write your MP now! Let them know we don't want to fund an industry 'just because' they fail to make a profit on their own (we all know they 'lost revenue' claims are all bull, and that none of the money from these levies will go to the ones that need it)

    Blame Canada

Figures a crazy idea like this would come from Canada. Tough I would have figured it to come from some liberal in the US instead, oh well.

    uh liberal?

why would it come from some liberal in us. other than the fact that hollywood bought our liberal politicians with $24million, it's the conservatives who time and again side with big business.

    let the copying commence

so, if the tax is going to pay royalties to those with copyrights on music in canada, does that then mean that they have now been compensated for the music that's been stolen? :-)

if this passes, they'll need to bring in the plastic-sniffing dogs to stop the pirate blank cd importation!

    Conservative or Liberal…

…is irrelevant in this issue. It's a matter of which politicians are bought by RIAA/Hollywood-types and stay that way.

A $105 tax on an iPod (Canadian$ or US$) is ridiculous, yet could be a reality if certain people get their way.

If this passes in Canada, I predict a VERY healthy business in bootleg US equipment begins.

    contact MP

I have just sent a e-mail to my MP expressing my displeasure with this. Fellow Canadian's do the same as soon as possible.

    We have already that...

...in France. For a year, we have been taxed on CD R, CDRW, DVDR, audio tapes :(

The tax on CDR is about 80% of the price !!!

And there will be (very soon) a tax on Hard Drive and memory cards. About 60 Euros tax for a 40 GB hard drive !!! :(

Yes, in France, everyone is seen as a pirate even if you don't copy anything and use your CDR for backup !

    re: In France

If you're in France, buy your media from the UK. We don't have a media tax (yet), and European Union free trade laws mean you shouldn't get taxed on anything you buy in the UK for use in France (otherwise that would be breaking EU trade agreements).
