Matrox Video Products Group today announced the release of Matrox RTMac, its much-anticipated realtime editing card which works with Final Cut Pro 2 to provide realtime editing. The "Matrox Flex 3D" architecture uses Matrox accelerator technology to provide broadcast-quality effects and 32-bit, uncompressed, animated graphics in a dual-stream, native-DV editing environment. The $1000 PCI-based card will be available within the next few days at authorized dealers and distributors worldwide. [price updated]

    I'm waiting for ProMax

If ProMax ever get's their RT-Max (they had that name before Matrox announced the RT-Mac BTW) done, that'll be the card to buy: Realtime rendering of 2 DV streams *TO FIREWIRE*!

Unless things have changed recently, the Matrox solution only does real time out to an analog port. That means if you want to archive back to DV you either have to put that through your deck's A-D converters and deal with generational loss or wait for rendering just as long as you would without the RT-Mac.

ProMax's card would allow you to do away with rendering for many of the most used effects and filters. (Not sure if it does CG)

It will probably cost twice as much but, to many of us, it'll be worth it!

    ANGRY Yosemite owner...

I started hassling them as soon as this thing was announced to be sure that it was going to be compatible with the B/W G3 (I will NOT upgrade until there are two or more 7560 CPUs, and 200mhz DDR..why should I can a fully decked out G3/400 with an LVD RAID and 512mb for a marginal speedup?)...One of their tech gimps said that it would be compatible with the Yosemite-I guess they were full of it...How does this thing rely on the G4 cpu and and AGP? What does it need AltiVec for if it is so fast? I might have misunderstood the thing...Does it just do some cliched effects in real time, or does it banish ALL DV rendering? What about a PCI card that just had some sort of hardware DVC codec to take the load off of the CPU? Any hope for a realtime card for a B/W owner? Cheers, J. (London)

    Whoops I meant 7460...

I will wait for a major upgrade with that (alleged) Apollo chip. I don't hold my breath though, as moto can barely fab a cookie... Seriously, PC133, 4xAGP, a slightly faster clock, and AGP? Not good enough yet to justify an upgrade...Matrox makes me weep...I thought that I could be through with all DV rendering (except for AE filters and such of course)...Did I miss something? J.

    Hold out for Promax

The Promax card is being redisinged, and will do so much more, including realtime color correction.

promax will work on a G3.

Promax will also do realtime out to firewire, the RT-Mac only does realtime preview. you still have to render before you export.

    promax vs matrox

The ProMax will do 2D first, then another card for 3D comes later. Just like Matrox is gonna do I'll bet.

Both appear that they will support the same number of streams.

ProMax gives you realtime out firewire stream (which I can't see until I run it thru a transcoder) while Matrox gives realtime out its built in transcoder.

Both are going to allow you to watch a good number of your effects, edits, graphics in real time on an NTSC monitor.

When you're done editing and want to go out firewire, Matrox will require you to hit the render all button. ProMax will allow you to immediately go to tape. That is of course if you don't have a lot of layers of cool effects which I know you all do or you wouldn't need this card. So, you're probably going to render most of your stuff either way except the simple stuff which doesn't take much time to render anyway.

Matrox is supported by collaboration with Apple and requires a little rendering at end of project. (do it at lunch or something)
ProMax isn't backed by Apple and will require a little less rendering and isn't out yet.

For me the choice is pretty obvious.

    Matrox RTMac Info

You can get more info about the Matrox RTMac on our website. It looks to be very exciting. Some important points:

    1) The RT Mac will allow you to convert analog to DV and DV to analog. So it acts like the Sony Converter box

    2) The RT Mac will drive a VGA screen. So you get instant dual monitor support

    3) You can get real-time previews out the analog jacks, but when you want to go out DV you will have to render.

    4) You will need to upgrade to or purchase Final Cut Pro 2.0. The RT Mac does not include any software.
