Crucial unveils M500 SSD line with up to 960GB capacity
Memory and storage purveyor Crucial today announced the availability of the Crucial M500 series of solid state drives (SSD). Featuring terabyte-class capacity, increased response times over previous models, and an advanced feature set, the Crucial M500 2.5-inch SSD is available in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities.

Using Micron's 20nm MLC NAND flash paired with a a SATA 3 controller using with Micron's custom firmware, the new drive series delivers up to 80,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS). The drive's sequential read and write speeds reach up to 500 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively.

The drive offers device sleep (DEVSLP), which increases system battery life. This feature enables the drive to draw less than 5 milliwatts of power while the system is in sleep mode -- a 93 percent improvement compared to Crucial's previous-generation drives

The Crucial M500 series of drives is cross-platform compatible with both Windows and OS X systems. The 2.5-inch, 7mm high drive is available for $130, $220, $400, and $600 for the 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities, respectively. M.2 and M-SATA form factors of the new drive are expected over the summer.
