Apple posts, pulls job listing pointing to future flexible display use
A job listing from Apple was posted on April 1 and removed today, revealing Apple's demand for a "Senior Optical Engineer." The listing, before its removal, was seeking "a Display Specialist to lead the investigation on emerging display technologies such as high optical efficiency LCD, AMOLED and flexible displays," possibly to work with the pair of patents it was recently awarded on flexible devices that could change operating modes as a user manipulates the display.

The post is no longer active on the Apple jobs page, but required an "in-depth understanding of display technology, particularly LCD & OLED design & optical performance trade-offs, including optical design, viewing angle, color and white point management, gamma and dimming control, visual performance and artifacts; and characterization metrics." It is possible that the company felt the want ad gave away too much, or has located a successful candidate for the job.

Apple files many patents on technologies that sometimes never see the light of day. The job posting, in conjunction with the pair of patents, gives more weight to the rumors that Apple is considering flexible display technology in a future product such as a smart watch.

One of the companies that has demonstrated its prowess with developing flexible display technology is frequent competitor Samsung, though few such products are yet available in the consumer marketplace.
