Nintendo denies rumors of a revised DS game system

Nintendo on Tuesday denied the possibility of a new DS portable gaming system making a debut at E3 in July, as suggested by Famitsu magazine publisher Hirokazu Hamamura. Last Friday at a seminar, Hamamura mentioned that historically, a new Nintendo handheld gaming system is launched every two years, with the DS Lite launching in 2006. At the time, Nintendo's PR department responded by saying they cannot say anything at the time, but Japan's head of PR had a more definitive answer yesterday.

"We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so [we] would like to clearly deny this," he said.

Apart from the slimming in 2006, Nintendo's dual-screen portable game console is relatively unchanged since its 2004 launch, though that hasn't slowed its sales, pegged at some 70 million worldwide. Speculations see a redesign include more multimedia functionality together with a memory card slot, perhaps even wireless connectivity and bigger screens. [via IGN]
