HP confirms 24 laptops affected by Nvidia fluke
HP on Monday addressed which of its laptops were impacted by the recent Nvidia defect, citing 24 different models that range as far back as November 2007, when HP began covering failed GPUs under warranty. The issue affects HP's Pavilion dv2000, dv6000, and dv9000 series laptops, and the Compaq Presario V3000 and V6000 series as well. HP is offering an updated BIOS for the affected machines, and is offering customers a complete set of diagnostic instructions, for determining whether a model is affected by the problem.

"HP has taken appropriate actions for any HP notebook products that use the known affected Nvidia chips," said HP on Monday. "We initiated a customer program to address this issue in November 2007, and have notified registered customers who have notebook PC models that are included in this HP program.

Identifiable symptoms include a black screen, a lack of power through the notebook, inactive status lights, and booting problems.

The news follows shortly after Dell performed a similar service for its clients, with the defect reaching across many of its product lines, including the popular Vostro, XPS, and Inspiron series.

When confronted with the problem, Nvidia adamantly denied the implied scale of the issue, insisting that only a "very small percentage" subset of its G84/G86 series graphics chipsets.
