Movie rental site Netflix is set to release an Application Programming Interface (API) that will allow developers to integrate content into applications, according to ReadWriteWeb. The API will open up access to 100,000 movie titles and TV episodes on DVD and allow users to access their Netflix accounts. Developers will initially be able to access data through REST API, JavaScript API, and ATOM feeds.Netflix has included read and write capabilities, which will enable queue management and addition of viewer ratings. Users will be able to add movies to their queue, reorder them, or remove items. The company has also allowed commercial use of the API, giving the example of iPhone apps as potential products.
User authentication will be provided using the open standard OAuth. The API is completely free and will be available tomorrow from the Netflix developer site.
