LED-backlit TN panels in a variety of sizes

Acer has imported four of its European LED-backlit LCD monitors to the US, a total of five models that range from the 20-inch S200HL to the 27-inch S271HL, which sports full 1080p HD resolution (1920x1080). The monitors, all using TN panels, range from $139 to $329 and will be available in April. All five feature eColor management buttons, have tilt bases and sport a 1,000,000:1 contrast ration and a 5ms response time, all while using 68 percent less power than florescent-backlit LCD displays.

Features 170-degree lens, built-in viewfinder

Snow sports accessory maker Zeal Optics has expanded its sports google line with the debut of the iON Google, a visor that also includes a 1080p HD camera that can capture video and sound, or 8MP still images. The camera features a 170-degree wide angle, fixed "infinity" focus and automatic light-level adjustment, storing its media on a micro-SD card. It also has an in-goggle viewfinder.

Onkyo has announced that it is set to introduce several new A/V receivers that are claimed to be the industry's first to support InstaPrevue and mobile high-definition link (MHL) technologies. The MHL standard, which is already utilized for a variety of tablets and smartphones, enables devices to transmit 1080p video with 7.1-channel digital audio across a dual-purpose Micro-USB port.

Swann has introduced the the Freestyle HD, the company's first wearable video camera that shoots in HD resolution. The camera allows users to capture eight-megapixel still photos or 1080p video at 30fps, with options for stereo audio, digital zoom and single or continuous shooting in still mode. Content can be previewed on an integrated 1.5-inch LCD on the backside.

Split-screen allows TV, internet use together

Epson will be bringing a new line of 2D/3D "Full HD" home theater projectors and one new model of pro cinema projector to dealers and outlets in October and November. The units feature extremely high refresh rates and 2,400 lumen brightness to help combat the main complaint with 3D television: lowered brightness and picture quality. The units can also "split the screen" allowing for two inputs (such as TV and internet) to be used at the same time.

Extends number of possible monitors

The UDA2000 is a new USB 2 to HDMI display adapter from Cirago International that allows both Mac and Windows users to easily connect to HDMI monitors, projectors or HDTVs without having to add internal video cards, external breakout expanders or separate audio and video connections in order to increase the number of monitors they can work with. PCs can add up to six 1080p-compatible monitors, while Mac users can add up to four, each using a USB port and adapter.

Offerings range from 16X to 30X optical zoom

Sony has introduced two new superzoom point-and-shoot cameras, the CyberShot DSC-HX100V and DSC-HX9V. Both models integrate 16.2-megapixel Exmor R sensors capable of recording 1080p video, 3D content, and 42.9-megapixel "Sweep Panorama" stills when the user rotates the camera. The new cameras also allow users to capture three-megapixel still pictures while shooting movies.

LaCie on Tuesday introduced the LaCinema Classic HD, a media server capable of full 1080p video playback. Users can connect an HDTV using a standard HDMI cable, while Composite connectors are also available. Multichannel DTS audio is supported, sent via HDMI or a dedicated S/PDIF optical port. A 1TB hard drive is integrated for storing movies, music or photos, while a USB 2.0 connection is provided for interface with a computer.

Device marks Creative's foray into cellular market

Creative subsidiary ZiiLABS has announced that it will unveil the Zii smartphone platform at the upcoming Zii Summit event. The ZMS-05 system-on-a-chip (SOC) components are claimed to be the first to offer 1080p video playback capabilities on a handheld device. The Media Rich Processor also boasts OpenGL ES 3D graphics with acceleration for web browsing, video playback and imaging.

Users will be able to upload full HD next week

YouTube has announced that it will allow users to upload 1080p HD video content without limiting playback to a lower resolution. The web-based interface will provide a choice between the current maximum, 720p, and full 1080p. The change brings YouTube up to speed with the limited number of video portals, such as SmugMug, that support the higher resolution.

Dell has quietly introduced several new monitors, the 21.5-inch ST2210 and the 23-inch ST2310. Both displays feature 1080p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, along with an anti-glare coating on the panel. The company also lists a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 250cd/m² brightness and 5ms response time.

Sharp on Wednesday unveiled several new AQUOS LCD high-definition televisions to the North American market, including two limited-edition models. Sharp's D65U lineup offers a native 1080p resolution, and spans between 42- and 52-inches, featuring a 6ms response time. Sharp touts the energy-saving features of the line, saying it is Energy Star-compliant, with active backlight and contrast controls to reduce energy consumption while the set is in use.

Anchor Bay Technologies on Friday announced it will soon release its DVDO EDGE 1080p upscaling video processor for home theaters. The audiovisual hub includes six HDMI 1.3 Deep Color inputs, two HDMI 1.3 outputs and a full complement of various other analog and digital A/V connections. It upscales video content thanks to Anchor Bay's Video Reference Series technologies, which include 10-bit de-interlacing and progressive reprocessing of files that would otherwise deinterlace poorly.

Westinghouse Digital on Tuesday unveiled four new 1080p-capable LCD TVs, as well as several other multi-purpose LCD TVs, including its portable and all-in-one units. New to the 1080p TX lineup are the 42-inch TX-42F430S, the 47-inch TX-47F430S, and the 52-inch TX-52F480S, which feature an integrated ATSC/NTSC/ClearQAM Tuner, and 1080p resolution through all high-definition connectors, including component and VGA.
