Nintendo delivers a compelling upgrade to its glasses-free 3D gaming platform

If you thought that handheld gaming consoles like those from Nintendo have tanked following the rise of smartphones, you'd be wrong. In fact, following the introduction of the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, Nintendo has shifted over 50 million 3DS or 3DS XL consoles, demonstrating that there is still a large audience that likes physical controls and a deeper gaming experience. Giving its handheld product line a shot in the arm, Nintendo has given both the 3DS and 3DS XL a revamp, bringing some genuinely worthwhile feature upgrades. So does the Nintendo 3DS still warrant your consideration in 2015?

Poster leaked online shows release date of February 13

A member of gaming site Neogaf's community has leaked what appears to be aa poster for the new Nintendo 3DS XL. The poster shows a release date of February 13. More tantalizing, however, is the inclusion of two possible launch titles -- one of which is the highly anticipated remake of Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. The game had previously been teased with the more vague window of "Q1 2015," but it now appears to be on track to be included with the 3DS XL.

New bundle comes with two games, limited to Wal-Mart, Microsoft Store

Consumers looking for a replacement Microsoft Xbox 360 will have another option coming on October 7, just in time for the holiday shopping season. The new version of the almost nine-year-old console is bathed in blue, adding arctic blue accent pieces on both console and controller. Priced at $250, the Xbox 360 Special Edition Blue Bundle comes with a 500GB hard disk in the console, a month of Xbox Live Gold, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Nintendo Circle Pad Pro coming for 3DS later this year

Following the 3DS XL unveiling last week, a number of commentators were quick to criticize the console for omitting a second analog stick. A report emanating from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has confirmed that Nintendo will release a Circle Pad Pro for the larger console as it did for the original 3DS. Although only a handful of gaming titles support the second analog stick, its inclusion opens up the potential for more complex gaming.

3DS XL gains larger screen and bigger battery

Nintendo has revealed the 3DS XL, a larger version of its existing portable console with the glasses-free 3D display. Confirming rumors from earlier this month, the handheld copies the pattern set by the DSi and DSi XL by having a larger main screen to match the similar naming convention.

Rumored Nintendo 3DS XL may get a 4.3-inch 3D screen, E3 unveiling

Nintendo may upsize its current 3DS portable gaming console, according to reports from Japan that were picked up by SlashGear. If true, the device will likely be called the 3DS XL, following Nintendo's naming convention with the DSi and DSi XL. The 3DS XL is said to get a 4.3-inch display up top rather than the current model's 3.53-inch screen.
