iPad 2 shifts 32nm process for A5 processor
Apple’s cut-price iPad 2, which it continues to sell alongside its new iPad, has been given a boost with a shift to a new 32nm A5 processor from the original 45nm iteration. Although using fundamentally the same architecture, the die-shrunk version has been shown by Anandtech to draw less power offering significant improvements in battery life. The latest iPad 2’s carrying the updated dual-core processor are designated by the model number ‘iPad 2,4’ and utilize Samsung’s 32nm high-k + metal gate LP transistors, which helps to explain the performance differential.
New tech previewed at Intel IDF
Intel is reportedly aiming to advance its Atom architecture with chips based on 15 nanometer processes. The technology would represent a significant leap, as current Atom offerings are all based circuits with a minimum of 45nm technology. Even the Cedar Trail platform, scheduled succeed the Pine Trail series in 2011, will be the first Atoms to be based on a 32nm process.
VIA 45nm, dual-core chips
Mobile processor manufacturer VIA on Thursday announced it would commence shipments of 45nm processor fabrications in 2009, as well as the company's first dual-core chips. DigiTimes writes that insiders have brought to light some of the specs, with the Isaiah-based dual-core processor allegedly featuring a 2GHz core frequency. The chip will sit on an 800 to 1333MHz bus, and will feature two pairs of 64KB L1 cache, and 1MB L2 cache.
AMD 6 and 12 core Opterons
AMD on Wednesday unveiled definitive plans for 6- and 12-core Opteron processors, made with a 45nm fabrication process, which will be available most likely during 2009. TG Daily writes that the company will continue to support the Socket F (1207) platform through to its 6-core, single-die Istanbul, but will make a departure from the standard in 2010, when AMD unveils its Maranello platform. Production samples of the 45nm chips have already been made available to vendors.
AMD reveals 45nm Shanghai
AMD engineers this week said that the company plans on introducing new 12-core processors later this year. The first processors based on 45nm Shanghai platform are due later this year and will be nearly identical to the B3 variant of the Socket 1207 Opteron (Barcelona) shipping today, according to DailyTech. The processors will reportedly use the faster HyperTransport 3.0 for inter-CPU communication and will debut later this year as a "native six-core" Shanghai derivative, currently code-named Istanbul. That processor, the report claims, is "clearly targeted at Intel's recently announced six-core, 45nm Dunnington processor." A few months later, Shanghai and its derivatives will also get twin-die per package treatment, allowing for up to 12-cores per package, the report says.
Penryn XPS M173
Dell is now offering customers the option to include an Intel Core 2 Duo "Penryn" processor select XPS M1730 notebooks. Users can select the Core 2 Duo T8300 at 2.4GHz or T9300 at 2.5 GHz 45nm CPUs with the 17-inch M1730. The former is included in the unit's price, while the latter is a $125 upgrade. The T7800, running at 2.6GHz, is a $400 upgrade option. Introduced in January, the 45-nanometer Core 2 notebook platform is based on the same Penryn architecture as the desktop Core 2 and Xeon parts. The smaller, denser chips also make room for media instructions and larger caches.
MacBook Air: special CPU
Apple's not only pushed the envelope with the industrial design of the MacBook Air, but also pushed Intel to deliver some advanced CPU technology, according to a new report. Rather than use Intel's newly introduced 45-nm Penryn mobile chips, the company used a modified version of current 65nm mobile chips with smaller packaging. According to Anandtech, the new MacBook Air uses a specialized version of Intel's Merom-based Core 2 Duo chip, the same chip used in Apple's other laptops (and from other PC vendors); however, it appears that the chip is actually uses technology originally slated to ship with its next-generation Montevina platform later this year.
Lenovo X61 with 45nm
Lenovo today updated its ThinkPad X series ultraportables to take advantage of the extra speed from Intel's 45-nanometer Penryn architecture Core 2 Duo chips. The new 12-inch system now has the option of a 2.1GHz or 2.3GHz processor (up from 1.8GHZ and 2GHz) and its accompanying larger 3MB of cache. Wi-Fi over 802.11n is also now a more common feature on these faster systems.
Intel 45nm Penryn Mobile
Intel today ended the wait for its first 45-nanometer Core 2 platform. Based on the same Penryn architecture as the desktop Core 2 and Xeon parts, the new technique allows Intel to ramp up clock speeds in the tight spaces of a notebook without affecting power consumption or heat. The smaller, denser chips also make room for new features, Intel explains. SSE4 media instructions greatly improve the performance of encoding audio, images, and video as well as games when optimized for the new code; the revision also boosts Level 2 cache by 50 percent across the board and offers a Deep Power Down mode that almost completely shuts off the CPU when not in use.
Penryn C2D in January
Intel's first mobile processors using the company's 45-nanometer Penryn architecture have been exposed and have a fixed release date, according to a new leak. The initial release will continue to use the Santa Rosa mainboard platform but ramp up clock speeds, add new media-oriented SSE4 extensions, and increase the Level 2 memory cache without affecting the power use or the price. Every mainstream processor will have a typical peak power use of 35 watts virtually identical to the larger and slower 65nm models they replace, according to the tip. The introductory processors will all be dual-core chips, with quad-core waiting until the release of Intel's new Montevina mobile platform in the summer.
