Intel MWC to involve MeeGo phone and tablet
A behind the scenes sighting on Sunday of last-minute Mobile World Congress prep at the Fira de Barcelona confirmed that Intel plans to show a Atom-based MeeGo smartphone at the event on Monday. The unnamed device was seen in a building-sized promo image side-by-side with an unnamed tablet running a larger version of MeeGo. Neither was given a name by Meet MeeGo, but the phone may be Aava Core hinted at earlier.

Aava to bring 2nd gen Core handset to MWC
Aava Mobile is issuing invites to check out its 8.9mm thin Core smartphone at the Mobile World Congress show in mid-February. The device will be powered by the Intel Medfield CPU, just like the phone briefly shown last week. The second-generation Core platform will run on both Android and MeeGo and be aimed at developers rather than end users.

Intel Medfield phone seen at sales event
Intel may have given shown the first known instance of a true smartphone using its Medfield-based Atom chips in a new sighting late Sunday. A shot has shown the Ultra Mobility Group's general manager Anand Chandrasekher holding up an unnamed phone at a sales event. From a distance, the hardware seen by a Meego.org forum goer looked to be running on Android but was clearly unrelated to the Aava phone prototype shown last year.

Intel gets Palm's Mike Bell for reference phones
Intel landed a win for its fledgling smartphone efforts today as it hired Palm's Senior VP of Product Development Mike Bell. The executive will now be the Director of Smartphone Product Development and will develop "breakthrough smartphone reference designs" to help get Atom-based phones on to shelves sooner. His role will involve creating a team almost from new within the Ultra Mobility Group that had previously been limited to MIDs and other larger devices.

Dev phone adds slew of new sensors
Aava Mobile has unveiled an updated version of its Atom Z600-based smartphone prototype, the Virta 2. The handset sports a revised housing with a gunmetal frame, without the chrome bezel of its predecessor.

Platform brings 50% improvement in tests
The Aava MeeGo development platform allegedly outpaces Android 2.2 in JavaScript tests. Carrypad was able to complete the SunSpider series of test operations in 4215ms on the MeeGo prototype, an improvement of approximately 1.5 seconds over a Nexus One running Android 2.2 and less than half the time it takes an iPhone 4 to finish the series.

Intel Moorestown finally launches as Atom Z600
Intel today at last launched its first Atom processor designed for smartphones and tablets. Once known as Moorestown, the Z600 and its companion MP20 hub are much more power efficient than regular Atom chips, especially in low-demand situations. It gets a strictly average 4-5 hours of battery life for cellular browsing or video viewing but over 10 days of standby and about 2 days of audio.
