Angry Birds' new release focuses on female characters

Rovio has announced its upcoming new game Angry Birds Stella, offering a female lead character. Rovio CEO Mikael Hed says Stella will feature "passionate characters who really stand for something, while adding plenty of action and and reality into the mix." As with previous Angry Birds games, Stella will likely have books, toys, and other merchandise associated with the title. It is anticipated to be released this fall.

Music editor Liquid Notes receives new track view, more control elements

Re-Compose's latest update to its music editing software, Liquid Notes, has its focus on user interface improvements. Released yesterday, its previous multi-function knob has been replaced by individual control elements for chord substitution, tension, and function. Other notable changes to Liquid Notes include more control while in track view, allowing for a high-level overview of one's musical arrangements on a single-instrument level. Ableton Live is now better supported, with the addition of a "multiple single-track import" feature to accommodate Live's lack of support for multi-channel MIDI arrangements. Available as a free trial download, or fully licensed software priced at $175, Liquid Notes can be obtained online from Re-Compose.

The biggest addition is dual-monitor support, allowing musicians to keep important tools up side-by-side. Users can also scan documents and manage print finishing and scanning options, such as paper size selecting, scan resolution, duplex printing, and more.

Venerable audio software producer Ableton has unveiled beta releaseversion 8.4 for Ableton Live 8. The new release features native 64-bit support, allowing for the use of more than 4GB of RAM with the application. The beta release is available now, and the full release will be available later for free for registered Live 8, Suite 8, Live Intro, or Live Lite 8 users.

E-on Software has launched Vue 10.5 Personal Learning Edition, a free version of the company's 3D environment creation tool. The Personal Learning Edition includes a fully functional version of Vue 10.5 xStream/Infinite, however several restrictions have been put in place. Network rendering has been disabled and scene files created with the PLE cannot be exchanged with other PLE users and are not compatible with other versions of Vue. In addition to the PLE, the company has also announced that it will be offering Vue 10 Complete at the discounted price of $449 until June 25.

To celebrate the winter season, Ableton will be offering a 25 percent discount off all purchases made before January 15th, 2012. Ableton offering Retro Synth gift

Other World Computing has released a Mac compatible firmware updater for SandForce Driven solid state drives. The new updater is available as a free download from the OWC website and is designed for exclusive use with select OWC Mercury SSD models manufactured after January 2010. To run the updater, users have to download software from OWC to make a bootable DVD. The DVD can then be used to launch a graphical interface that will guide the user through the process of installing the latest firmware revision to their SSD.

Kobo has announced the launch of Reading Life, a new services for its iPad eReading application. Users can track their personal reading history, check-in with characters and places inside books, and earn achievements for reading. An activity panel shows a timeline of reading activity, allowing users to see how many books have been read, the number of pages turned, and more. As users read more books, the software will also create a personal book cover that is a mosaic of everything that has been read. The Kobo applications is available as a free download in the App Store.

Ableton has introduced Amp, a new effects add-on for the developer's Live production software. The expansion simulates various real-world guitar amps, improving the character of Live's output. The "Blues" effect, for example, is modeled after a 1970s amp, while "Rock" simulates "the best known rock amp of all time," a 45W model from the '60s. Some other options include Clean, Boost, Lead, Heavy and Bass.

Remote HD has announced the release of a new Apple TV plugin that lets users control the set-top with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. In order to install the software users must first unlock their Apple TV and use an SSH client to transfer required files. After successfully installing Remote Helper, any Apple handheld running the full version of Remote HD can be used to control an Apple TV wirelessly. The mobile app features several methods of controlling an Apple TV, including an Apple-style touch remote, and a Remote View feature that displays a live, touch-enabled view of the Apple TV's display. Users can download the plugin for free from the Remote HD website; the Remote HD app runs for $8 in the App Store.

Apple CEO says iPhone cross-compilers poor

Apple chief Steve Jobs last night held a rare direct chat with a user to explain the ban on cross-compiling code in the iPhone 4.0 SDK. The company co-founder directed Tao Effect's Greg Slepak to a post by tech writer John Gruber that notes Apple likely wants to better determine what new features can be added. If Apple explicitly allowed Adobe's Flash-to-iPhone conversion or MonoTouch, it would let these third-party tools have much of the control over when features are exposed to developers, Gruber said.

Bridge forms links with Serato software

Among the Ableton announcements at this week's NAMM expo is The Bridge, a partnership with Serato. The software lets musicians shift material back and forth between Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live or Itch. When moving from Ableton to Serato, The Bridge enables Ableton Transport Control, letting an artist drag a Live Set into a deck in a Serato program, where it can be controlled with turntables and other hardware. Going in the opposite direction lets users turn a mix into a Live Set, which can be edited in more detail.

Ableton has released two free Live Packs as a holiday promotion. The software expands the number of samples in the company's Live 8 production suite, primarily in terms of drum and beat-oriented samples from drummer K.J. Sawka. The first pack, Mad Beatz, is intended for drum-and-bass, dubstep and breakbeat tracks. Aside from live drum recordings, it includes electronic percussion, basslines and keyboards.

At the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) expo, Akai showed the APC40 MIDI control surface it has developed in conjunction with Ableton, making it the first such device to be ready to run out of the box with the Ableton Live music editing software. As there is no need to load drivers, users simply plug in their notebooks via a USB port and can begin mixing or otherwise modifying their music using Ableton Live. The APC40 is being touted as the simplest, most direct hardware interface with the popular software, yet still allows advanced users to assign the board's 40 buttons, knobs and fader controls to any virtual controls in the software.

All the buttons and faders to adjust the final output have similarly been replaced with touch-sensitive controls and will recognize multi-tap commands to quickly bring down a sound level or apply an effect.
