Samsung updates notifications on Galaxy Gear for Twitter, Facebook, Gmail

Samsung has issued an update for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, improving the notifications on the device. Messages and tweets from Gmail, Twitter, Google Hangouts, and Facebook Messenger can now be partially read on the wristwear, reports Pocket-Lint, with changes to Smart Relay making the switch between viewing information on the watch and a smartphone easier. The lift-and-pause gesture for activating the clock has also been improved.

Samsung is wading into the gaming market by launching a new controller accessory for smartphones. The Smartphone GamePad and accompanying Mobile Console app connects to a smartphone or tablet over Bluetooth 3.0, though Galaxy smartphones running Android 4.3 also gain NFC pairing, allowing it to offer console-style control in compatible mobile games.

Verizon GS4 owners first to get new Gear compatibility

Galaxy S4 owners with Verizon as a carrier should begin receiving a software update today that will enable their devices to work with Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The update, which installs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, will be rolling out to other device owners and other carrier customers over the coming weeks. Samsung will eventually roll out Gear compatibility to many of the higher-end Galaxy devices it has released over the last two years.

The update, which leaked earlier this week, brings a number of improvements to Android itself as well as Samsung-specific changes, and also allows the Galaxy S 4 to communicate with the Galaxy Gear smart watch over Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.

HTC One gains Android 4.3 on Sprint, Verizon and AT&T to follow

Owners of the HTC One on Sprint in the United States will now be able to upgrade their device to Android 4.3. The operating system, having already appeared on unlocked versions, is said by Android Beat to be heading to other US carriers such as AT&T and Verizon by the end of October, at roughly the same time as updates for french carrier SFR's customers.

Android version 4.3 will be reaching the Samsung Galaxy S 4 in October, according to a European carrier's update roadmap. SFR of France has revealed that, just as reported earlier, the Galaxy S 4 will be the first of three Samsung devices to get the update to 4.3 Jelly Bean, with the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II both getting it at a later time.

Moto X to get stock Android version, but no versions headed to Europe

The Moto X will be getting a Google Play Edition according to the handset maker. The just revealed Moto X runs a largely unmodified version of Android 4.2.2, but device will have its OS lightly customized for each of the five US carriers that the device will be sold on. Although Motorola hasn't revealed when the Google Play Edition will go on sale through the Google Play store, it will be free from carrier apps and other mods, meaning that it will receive software updates more quickly and will ship out of the box with Android 4.3.

Android special event now up on YouTube

Google has posted its Android special event from the past Wednesday where it launched the new Nexus 7, Android 4.3, and the Chromecast streaming dongle. Although the one-hour event was streamed live, it has now been made available for anyone who missed the announcements to view in their own time, and is embedded below. The event is notable for the additional pressure that Google has put on Apple to get an iPad mini with Retina display out the door as soon as possible, while its Chromecast device has also put Apple's (albeit more capable) Apple TV media center under some price pressure as well.

Release keeps Jelly Bean name

[Updated with download link] Google has released Android 4.3, a minor update that will continue to be distributed under the Jelly Bean monicker. The mobile OS is claimed to bring improved performance, along with new APIs for developers. Most of the tweaks are under the hood, however apps can now provide new ways to access and interact with notification streams or send notifications to Bluetooth devices.

Android 4.3 may have made an appearance on the Nexus 4, ahead of its release. A screenshot and a backup of the mobile operating system have been posted to the XDA developer forum, after Jeff Williams on Google+ was asked to prove his claim of receiving the Nexus 4 with it preinstalled instead of Android 4.2.

HTC One 'Google Edition' seen at Bluetooth SIG running Android 4.3

Filing hints at sooner release of mobile operating system update

A second version of the HTC One Google Edition has appeared at Bluetooth SIG. The new model, filed on June 18th and receiving Bluetooth certification on July 5th, is shown to be running on Android 4.3 instead of the stock Android 4.2 installation for the device, with the model number PN071 said to be the same as the one available through the Google Play Store.
