HP unveils Open webOS, makes code swap to allow more devices

HP Open webOS ready by September with common Linux

HP has acted on its promise to open-source webOS with an important change that could affect the devices that use it. Now called Open webOS, it's moving to a common Linux kernel that will let hardware makers use much more typical drivers and bring it to hardware beyond what HP originally intended. The OS will sit under an Apache 2 license, which will let others copy code as long as they include the license and attribution.

Apple Lossless music format goes open-source

ALAC now open to modify and use

Apple in a gesture to the community started up the Apple Lossless Audio Codec project to open-source its lone proprietary audio standard. Its change lets developers implement and modify the format for both encoding and playback. Codes also get an example app that can read or write audio to Core Audio and WAV, along with a "magic cookie" to use when making M4A and MP4 clips.

MvixUSA shows NAS with iTunes, torrent, web services

MvixUSA intros NAS/server

MvixUSA is bringing a versatile Network Attached Storage device to the market, the MvixBOX or WDN-2000, the company announced on Tuesday. The two-bay NAS doubles as a media server, as it is capable of torrent sharing in addition to dynamic website hosting and data back-up capabilities. While the product ships without any included hard-drives, it is capable of housing two 1.5TB SATA HDDs. The MvixBOX does ship pre-configured with Apache, MySQL, SQlife and PHP web servers as well as dynamic DNS functionality. For network access, a gigabit Ethernet connection is present.

iTools 9 updates Apache support, improves FTP

iTools 9 update released

Tenon has released a new edition of iTools, bringing the program up to version 9. The software is a web-based graphical interface for administering web servers, and specifically handles Apache, DNS and FTP management. The greatest change to v9 is the inclusion of Apache 2.2.6, which is said to have better memory and disk use, support for file sizes above 2GB, and a new database interface architecture. The FTP component of the program now has a new File Manager, which lets admins assign clients to specific groups, which are then given permissions for uploading, renaming and deleting files.
