Company fills in gap left by Steve Jobs

Arthur Levinson (pictured) has been named as the new chairman of the Apple board of directors, the company has announced. Levinson has been on the board since 2000, and also chairs at several other institutions, including Genentech, the Broad Institute, Amyris Biotechnologies, and NGM Biopharmaceuticals. In chairing Apple he will be replacing Steve Jobs, who died on October 5th. Levinson will continue to remain on the Apple board's audit committee.

Most shares controlled by organizations

The newest member of Apple's board of directors, Ronald Sugar, led the way in terms of re-election votes at this week's shareholder meeting, a Form 8-K submitted to the SEC reveals. Sugar in fact trumped CEO Steve Jobs, getting 3.5 million more votes to sit in excess of 574 million. Sugar has only been with Apple since November.

The next Final Cut Studio should ship in March or early April, and be a "substantial update" if not as feature-complete as some people may be expecting, according to information obtained by Hardmac. The timeframe is roughly in keeping with a promise from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who in November suggested that Final Cut would be updated "early next year." Two separate betas of the software are said to be in existence however: one for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and another for Lion. Some features are allegedly being reserved for Lion, as a result of changes made to Mac OS X's QuickTime layer.

Apple heads donate over $3 ...

Recipients go unlisted

Two executives and two board members at Apple donated over $3 million in stock this month, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. All of the donations took place between the 10th and the 17th; the biggest one is noted to have been made by board member Millard Drexler, also currently the CEO of J. Crew. He donated 6,800 shares on December 14th at a closing price of $320.29 per, making the offering worth about $2.178 million.

May put an end to FTC investigation

Arthur Levinson has resigned from Google's board of directors, according to an official statement. The company is terse on details, noting only that Levinson has been with Google since April 2004, and that the resignation is immediate and amicable. "Art has been a key part of Google's success these past five years, offering unvarnished advice and vital counsel on every big issue and opportunity Google has faced," reads a quote from company CEO Eric Schmidt.
