Apple's hobby media model polar opposite of iPhone
Apple has long described its Apple TV peripheral as "a hobby" for the company, and the device appears to bring in revenues commensurate with its status within the company. Analytics firm Asymco recently took a look at the sales history for Apple TV, finding that the device likely pulls in revenues comparable to Apple's popular accessory, the iPad Smart Covers. The Apple TV, though, displays a media revenue model starkly different from any of Apple's other devices.
Asymco shows Apple at two thirds of mobile income
Apple's record spring quarter was enough to give it two thirds of the profits in the cellphone business. An analysis from Asymco shows that, while profit dropped slightly overall for the industry, Apple widened its share to 66.3 percent. Its stake was up from exactly half just this fall.
Asymco says iPhone app downloads overtaking songs
App downloads on iOS are accelerating quickly enough that they could overtake music in just two months, Asymco estimated on Sunday. The App Store will reach the 10 billion mark in just 31 months, less than half the 67 months it took for 10 billion songs, and at its current rate should overtake iTunes sometime in March. The company's Horace Dediu noted that Apple was now not only recording 30 million app downloads per day but seeing that rate increase.
