BlackBerry has attacked iMessage in a blog post, as it attempts to try and convert more users to BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). The post, written by head of product and brand marketing for BBM Jeff Gadway, latches on to recent reports about spam messages on iMessage, and lists off ways the service allegedly beats Apple's messaging platform.

BlackBerry is attempting to reassert itself in the business messaging market, by offering a version of its service with enhanced protection designed for regulated industries, such as government agencies or financial services. BBM Protected is the first launch in its eBBM suite of apps, using a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library to secure the message between both participants, on top of the company's existing BBM security model.

Sony's latest waterproof smartphone to be available in May through Bell

Sony and Bell announced today the exclusive availability of Xperia Z2 waterproof smartphone in the Canadian market. The Xperia Z2 has a 5.2-inch screen, is 8.2mm (0.33-inch) thick, offers 4K video recording, and can utilize new Xperia camera apps. Sony's Xperia Z2 will be available in black, white and purple across Canada from Bell Mobility in May 2014.

Whistle Activity Monitor now available at PetSmart, new apps updated

Dog monitor Whistle has announced its availability throughout the US through pet retailers PetSmart. A device that attaches to a dog's existing collar, Whistle collects data on activities throughout the day and night, then wirelessly sends the information to a connected smartphone. The retail announcement is also joined by an app update for iOS devices, including new graphing, and the ability to share data with friends. The company also unveiled its official app for Android. Whistle is priced at $130, and is available online as well as at PetSmart locations.

BlackBerry Messenger will be preinstalled on the LG G Pro Lite in the future, BlackBerry has revealed. The BBM client for Android will first appear on the smartphone as a standard pre-install and via the LG App Manager under the new bundling agreement and will also be installed on to a number of other LG smartphones, though LG has yet to reveal what hardware will carry it.

A number of attendees at the event have tweeted that at least one person, and possibly two have been stabbed. RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins has continued his interviewing with hints the company might not be as closed to the possibility of BlackBerry Messenger on other mobile platforms as once thought. He told CrackBerry that he was still committed to the core BlackBerry platform and there weren't immediate plans, but that the company "should never rule this [possibility] out." RIM sued by BBM Canada for misusing name

RIM was found Friday to be facing another lawsuit over one of its core products. Broadcast group BBM Canada is now known to have sued RIM on August 12, 2010, and to face a hearing on January 11, 2012, for allegedly misusing the BBM term to refer to BlackBerry Messenger. Unlike most such cases, BBM Canada could point to genuine cases of confusion, the Globe and Mail said, with staff being mistaken for RIM workers and an analytics branch being mistakenly called for messaging help.

RIM quickly confirmed rumors Thursday and launched BBM Music. True to expectations, the cloud music service is unusual in deliberately limiting each member to 50 songs of their own. To expand the library, listeners have to be BlackBerry Messenger friends with others also subscribed to the service, gaining access to their catalog. The goal is not just to tie users to BBM but to help them discover songs they wouldn't have found on their own.

Government might shut down sites in emergencies

At a special session of Parliament Thursday morning, UK Prime Minister David Cameron blamed social media sites for the way they were used to organize riots in London and other cities in England this week. Cameron suggested allowing law enforcement to track activity on social media sites to prevent them from being used to plot "violence, disorder and criminality." RIM reportedly had been cooperating with police before Cameron made his remarks.
