Retailers choose platform-agnostic option
Two major US retailers -- Best Buy and Walmart -- have announced that they will not support Apple Pay, according to the Wall Street Journal. The companies are instead said to be backing a payment service operated by Merchant Customer Exchange. The MCX technology requires only an app download, and is platform-agnostic, supporting older iPhones as well as Android devices. Apple Pay will be restricted to the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and Apple Watch.
Retailers looking to clear out old stock
Best Buy is conducting a one-day sale on all its iPad Air models, cutting their costs by $75 each. That makes a 16GB Wi-Fi Air $425, and a 16GB 4G Air $555. The most expensive iPads -- 128GB 4G models -- have been lowered to $855. A further $50 discount on any of the models is available to educational buyers.

More details for the Moto 360 have surfaced, ahead of its expected launch early next month alongside two smartphones. A product listing for the Android Wear smartwatch appeared on the Best Buy website before being pulled from view, and provided not only a full list of specifications for the wearable device, but also confirmed that it will launch at $249.
Struggling chain attempting to reinvent itself to survive the modern market
In an interview, electronics retailer Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly believes that the day of the tablet may already be over. Citing observations at his stores, the CEO claims that the company has "actually had a revival of the PC business at Best Buy," giving credit to Microsoft for discontinuation of Windows XP, and to Apple for continuing to innovate for consumers.

Apple's cheaper $1,099 iMac, launched on the 18th, is already being sold for less at some third-party vendors. Best Buy is offering the computer for $980, while B&H Photo has marked it down to $979. Students shopping at Best Buy can use an electronic coupon to further reduce the price to only $830.
Logitech introduces new multimedia speaker system with satellite speakers, subwoofer
Logitech has announced the upcoming availability of its new 2.1 multimedia speaker system, the Multimedia Speakers Z213. Featuring two satellite speakers and a dedicated subwoofer, the system is designed to work with Windows and Mac computers, as well as tablets, smartphones and MP3 players. Its down-firing subwoofer with a four-inch driver provides a strong bass level, and its wired control pod holds controls for volume. Audio can be listened to through headphones connected to the 3.5mm-compatible headphone jack built into the control pod. The Logitech Multimeda Speakers Z213 system is also compatible with the company's Bluetooth Audio Adapter. Anticipated to be available this month, the Multimedia Speakers Z213 are priced at $30.

Sprint has started a promotion for students buying any new smartphones in the carrier's range over the holiday shopping period. Electronics retailer Best Buy announced on Tuesday that it will be offering at least $200 in trade-in value for any working third- or fourth-generation iPad or iPad mini through November 9. The value will be given in the form of a Best Buy gift card that can be used toward the purchase of anything else in the store. The value of the gift card may be dependent upon the tablet's model and condition, CNet reported.

Bluetooth karaoke device streams music content with Wi-Fi connection
Singing Machine, a home karaoke producer, has announced its new Bluetooth product: Singing Machine Home. The at-home karaoke device offers a compact design, as well as a number of features for accessing content. This includes Wi-Fi support for accessing an online library of more than 8,,000 HD karaoke videos, and a wireless microphone that doubles as a remote for browsing through a music library. The device plugs into a user's TV via HDMI and connects to cloud software Singing Machine Play -- the company's reaming platform. The Singing Machine Home will be priced at $300, and be available from BestBuy.com and Best Buy stores in late October.

The blue version of the HTC One will be going on sale through Best Buy from September 15th. Identical to the normal model except for color, the "metallic blue" smartphone will be available on AT&T and Verizon, along with Sprint, though the retailer has yet to reveal per-carrier pricing. It is suggested by Engadget that it could cost as much as $700 off-contract through the retailer.

Color-conscious fans of the HTC one may want to make their way to the local Best Buy outlet, as the big box retailer is now carrying a blue, Verizon-branded variant of the celebrated handset. A tipster pointed Engadget toward images of the device, showing the unibody aluminum construction with an electric blue hue. The blue variant hit Best Buy stores and Verizon retail locations on Friday.

EA has started to offer refunds for EA-published games bought through its digital marketplace, something that competitor Steam is yet to offer. Customers buying and downloading games through Origin have up to 24 hours from the first launch of the game, or seven days from the original purchase, to return the titles for a full refund. The Origin Great Game Guarantee, going live in 20 countries, will not apply to extra downloadable content.

Samsung has made official its rumored plan to introduce mini Samsung stores within 1,400 Best Buy stores throughout the US, reports the New York Times . The attempted buyout of Best Buy by founder Richard Schulze has failed. The deadline has passed for Schulze and his team of investors without a bid having been placed for the ailing electronics retailer, with the news of the failure coming at the same time as the fourth quarter results showed the company made a loss of $377 million for the period, continuing its current financial trend.
Layoffs latest in 'renew blue' program to cut company costs
According to reports, Best Buy corporate slashed 400 jobs at its Richfield, MN headquarters on Wednesday. The reduction is part of the "Renew Blue" initiative, attempting to restore the company's sales and profit levels and fight off online competitors with lower expenses. The company warns of more cuts to come. Best Buy says this round of job cuts don't include any of its retail sales force or store closures. Last year, the company closed 50 stores in early phases of the operation.
More 128GB version in stores by end of week
Microsoft has confirmed that more stock of its Surface Pro will be heading to stores. The head of the Surface team, Panos Panay, posted on Twitter that more 64GB models are shipping to Staples, Best Buy, Microsoft Stores and for online orders, while the 128GB variant will be reaching Best Buy and Microsoft Stores by Saturday.
Best Buy offers gift card with phone activations
Best Buy is currently offering complimentary $50 gift cards to all customers that active a new mobile phone. The offer is valid on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile phones activated with a two-year agreement at Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile or BestBuy.com. To receive the gift car customers must first register their mobile phone number, and up to four other numbers of a family plan, on Best Buy's website before February 9. All registered numbers will then be able to receive the $50 reward by activating a new phone anytime before December 31.
