Apple engineer seeks to extend Bonjour network protocol

Proposal given to form a governing body for mDNS, ZeroConf

During a meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in Atlanta, GA this week, Apple engineer Stuart Cheshire has proposed extending existing multicast DNS -- and by association Apple's Bonjour technology -- to better handle more complex network setups. The proposal is in response from complaints from colleges and universities regarding the networking protocol requesting that it function better with less bandwidth consumed on college campuses and other enterprise networks.

Netgear Wireless Extreme is Mac first

Netgear started the week by launching a Wi-Fi router primarily tailored to Mac users. The Wireless Extreme has the cosmetic looks, but it purportedly has native support for Time Machine with drives plugged into the USB port. Dedicated software lets USB printers share properly on Macs and other platforms even if they don't completely work within Mac OS X's usual support.

Apple seeds first Mac OS X 10.6.7 build to developers

Hot on heels of 10.6.6

Apple is already seeding the first beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers, reports say. Listed as build 10J842, the delta update measures 338.6MB, while the combo version is 992.9MB. Little else is known about the update so far except that several testing focus areas are listed. These include AirPort, Bonjour, SMB and the operating system's graphics drivers.

Reflects changes in Snow Leopard

In tandem with the release of Mac OS X 10.6.3, Apple has also posted two smaller updates for other operating systems. Security Update 2010-002 is directed at Leopard users, and includes all of the same security fixes as the Snow Leopard update. These close holes in areas such as AppKit, Core components and most notably QuickTime, which has had nine vulnerabilities addressed. The download is 78.39MB.

Apple Bonjour update copes with iTunes, Apple TV

First Bonjour update of 2010

Apple has posted a minor update for the Mac OS X edition of Bonjour, its network discovery protocol. The software locates computers, services and peripherals on a local network. Bonjour Update 2010-001 is said to address problems with "Apple TV and iTunes connectivity," beyond which Apple has provided no details. The patch is a 959KB download through Software Update.

Syabas preluded CES today with its most ambitious media hub to date. The Popbox replaces the Popcorn Hour as the flagship media hub and revolves around a major, much more polished interface overhaul designed by Moxie's inventor and former Microsoft executive Dewey Reid. In addition to showing visual thumbnails of virtually everything and universal search, the interface has applets known as Infopops that show weather, Twitter feeds and other data whenever the viewer pauses what's playing. As with the previously available Popapps, new Infopops can be added over time.

XtraLean has announced its latest file searching and sharing tool, DataLore, that utilizes both Spotlight and Bonjour technology. The app enables users to access and browse a variety of content both on their own computer and other systems connected to a network. It uses search-as-you-type technology, along with filters that allow users to search by file types. DataLore also comes with customizable search features, enabling specific folders to be selected or deselected when trying to find an item.

ShareTool 1.2.6 adds VPN configuration, warnings

ShareTool 1.2.6 for Mac

Yazsoft has released ShareTool 1.2.6, an update to its Bonjour connection tool. The new version displays a warning whenever multiple copies of the app are on the same network, and allows configuration of the program to improve VPN connections. In addition to previous e-mail changes, any e-mails sent out now include both external and local IP addresses. Changes have also been made to increase info displayed in the Dock menu, and add an option to resize the main window whenever a service is added.

All network traffic is encrypted, and any application is supported as long as it is compatible with both Bonjour and TCP/IP.

Messenger for Mac 7 ships

Microsoft has released Messenger for Mac 7, the latest version of its ported instant messaging client. For all users the major addition is support for Apple's Bonjour technology, which lets users more quickly detect other users and peripherals on a network. It is now also possible to sort through contacts with a new search tool, and create nicknames for people that will remain unchanged even as their screen name is altered.

ShareTool 1.0 does remote Bonjour access

ShareTool 1.0 released

Bains Software has released the initial version of ShareTool, its remote access software. The program lets users tap into any of their Bonjour services via the Internet, including screen and file sharing, as well as iTunes Music Sharing. Routers supporting NAT-PMP or UPnP are automatically configured, and remote services appear in applications like Finder and iTunes without extra effort.
