Nokia shy on tablets by says Windows 8 a boost
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop during an interview in the wake of Nokia World left the door open for a Windows 8 tablet. While he wouldn't comment on Nokia's own strategy, he told the Finacial Times Microsoft's desktop OS an "interesting opportunity," even indirectly. Because both Windows 8 and the new Lumia phones shared the basic tile-based interface, any success from Windows 8 tablets could draw attention to Windows Phone.

Nokia N9 may take cues from Apple, Booklet 3G
Nokia's N9 flagship has been spotted today in a gallery that suggests Nokia is taking strong design cues from Apple for its smartphone design. While the tapered design bears some resemblance to the N8, its unibody metal design, black keys and black display bezel appear directly lifted from Apple's current MacBook Pro. It also bears a lesser resemblance to Nokia's own aluminum-clad Booklet 3G netbook.

Nokia 57pc boost in smartphones not enough
Nokia this morning claimed a minor return to form with an upturn in its phone business, especially smartphones. It shipped a much larger 21.5 million "converged devices," which includes both its smartphones and the Booklet 3G, in the first quarter of the year. The tally is a 57 percent jump from a year ago and is estimated to give it 41 percent of the smartphone market, or a slight recovery from both the fall and from a year ago.

Large Nokia device would have OpenGL ES 2 video
Game developer Fishlabs fueled rumors of a Nokia tablet earlier this week by quietly mentioning collaboration on a project. Both Fishlabs and Nokia are working together on a top-tier game for a device with a "large screen" and graphics hardware capable of OpenGL ES 2.0 effects. The software team didn't say when it expected the game or the matching hardware to be ready.

Strong Booklet 3G demand nets 2nd model
Demand has been high enough for Nokia's Booklet 3G netbook that the company is moving ahead with a second model next year, a leak to Taiwan's Economic Daily News newspaper claims. Nokia's contractor in the area, Compal, is reportedly working "overtime" to meet demand for the Atom-based portable and that it's likely to receive orders for a 2010 model as well. Details of the system are unknown, including whether or not it's an upgrade to the existing system or an entirely new configuration.
