iPad Air teardown shows lower build cost than third-gen iPad

Uses single LTE chipset for all US carriers

In spite of shifting to more advanced components, the iPad Air is actually cheaper to build than the third-generation iPad was, according to a teardown by IHS iSuppli. The cost is estimated to be between $274 and $361 per unit, depending on the exact configuration. The base cost is $42 less than it was for the third-gen iPad. One contributing factor is the A7 processor, which while costing $18 per unit, is still $5 less than an A5 processor was 18 months ago.

Indego robotic lawn mower cuts a quarter-acre on its own

German manufacturer Bosch has unveiled what it calls the world's first intelligent lawn mower, the Bosch Indego. The Indego is an autonomous mower capable of cutting nearly a quarter of an acre of with little human intervention. The robot mower is programmed to avoid obstacles like garden furniture, pets, and flower beds.

HTC drops appeal against 3G ban in Germany

HTC may face ban on phones, tablets by IPCom

HTC faced another setback Friday after it decided to drop an appeal against a ban on its 3G devices in Germany. The company made the surprise reversal after it decided that it wasn't likely to win against IPCom, which claims all of HTC's 3G hardware violates its patents. IPCom claimed that it would have "no choice" but to ban HTC's hardware before the end of the year, as HTC had "never" had any cash offer that could be enough to cover the patents.
