Google brings Street View cameras into CERN, Large Hadron Collider

Google has expanded its unique Street View imagery with new content from inside the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) laboratories and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A team used a bike-mounted camera system, known as the "Street View Trike," to explore large parts of the LHC tunnel and the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments.

IBM building exascale supercomputer to tackle Big Bang

IBM, ASTRON join forces on ultimate supercomputer

A newly announced collaboration between ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, and IBM aims to research the world's most powerful exascale supercomputer to study space. Once built, the supercomputer will be used in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which is an effort to build the largest and most sensitive radio telescope that will involve millions of antennas to be built across 3,000 kilometers (about 1,860 miles), likely to be in Australia or South Africa and due to be completed by 2024. The joint effort, dubbed DOME, will initially span over five years and represents a 32.9 million euro ($43.8 million) investment.

Web hits 20 with new power but freedom fears

Saturday was a special occasion for the Internet as it represented the 20th anniversary for the World Wide Web. CERN scientist Tim Berners-Lee put forward plans on August 6, 1991 for Mesh, a system that would link documents to each other over the Internet. The proposal included now-commonplace concepts like hypertext, or the typical web link, as well as the possibility of linking directly to media online.
