Joint partnership NEC-Casio Mobile gave a preview Thursday of the Medias-badged devices it would have at Mobile World Congress as part of a major push into smartphones outside of Japan. Topping the group is an unusual dual-screen device, so far only known as the Best Cloud UX Device. The device carries two 4.3-inch screens and folds like a reverse book, with both screens on the outside; the Android 4.0 device becomes more of a tablet ideal for the cloud, NEC claims.

Hidden at Casio's booth at CES was a prototype of a smartphone even more rugged than its G'zOne line that has been caught only two weeks later. The phone seen by MyNavi would borrow the G-Shock name from Casio's watches and, with a thick outer frame, could take up to a 10-foot drop without breaking versus the more common three feet. It could also stay immersed in water up to 33 feet deep and take a ton of pressure, although it's not clear if this would be metric or imperial.

A focus group member claimed Wednesday to have been asked to give feedback on devices revealing at least some of its plans for the near future, most of which were for Verizon. The range-topping device purportedly identified by a Droid-Life reader would be very different than the rugged phones Casio usually ships, carrying a 4.5- or 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, a quad-core processor, LTE-based 4G, NFC wireless, and eight-megapixel back and two-megapixel front cameras. It would have a large-capacity 2,000mAh battery and ran the "latest Android," which looked to the reader to be Android 4.0.

Casio has announced several new EXILIM compact cameras. The flagship model is the EX-ZR200, a 16.1 megapixel compact which uses a 12.5x optical zoom lens, and supports 1080p video recording. Light sensitivity ranges from ISO 80 to 3200, and the camera also includes features such as Rapid Shutter and Premium AUTO PRO modes, the latter automatically enabling the likes of HDR, night scene, and anti-shake functions as needed.

Casio Japan, known for its calculators and wristwatches, has just introduced the first watches with Bluetooth LE (low energy) onboard, making it compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 cellphones like the iPhone 4S. The G-Shock GB-6900 will synchronize the current time from paired handsets and will display incoming call names or numbers, e-mails, and text messages on its display. Users can also switch handsets into vibration mode without touching them.

The companies did state that the deal calls for Casio to compensate Microsoft. Android successfully pushed past the iPhone for the top smartphone platform in Japan last fiscal year, according to MM Research Institute. Google shot up from just 250,000 phones and 11 percent of the market at the end of March 2010 to 4.91 million phones at the end of March this year, or 57.4 percent. Apple moved 3.23 million iPhones over the same period and was 37.8 percent; BlackBerry and Windows Mobile were virtually non-existent.

Japanese electronics maker NEC announced on Wednesday it will take steps to suppress the noise made by motors and related mechanisms used in the zoom lenses of its compact digital cameras. The technique would be most useful in movie recording mode. The technology would do so artificially and can be likened to noise cancelling methods, recording the core characteristics of the offending sounds and then removing them in real time from the signals recorded by the microphone.

It measures 4.8 inches diagonally and has a native resolution of 1920x1080 at an extremely high density of 458 pixels-per-inch (ppi). This is a much more densely packed display than the iPhone 4’s vaunted 3.5-inch Retina display, which has a 960x640 resolution at 326ppi.

The mobile merger that is NEC, Hitachi and Casio unveiled aggressive expansion plans this week. The resulting company, now called NEC Casio Mobile Communications, plans to ship 12 million handsets in 2012, which represents an increase of 60 percent compared to all phones shipped by the three individual companies in 2009. This expansion may reach the US, with reports suggesting NEC Casio Mobile looking to tie in with Verizon and AT&T.

Casio at CES showed off a unique prototype of a location-aware camera based on the company's existing EX-10 shooter. The EX-10HG (Hybrid GPS) has a built-in GPS sensor for geotagging photos when outdoors, but when a signal is lost once users go indoors or are in heavily built-up downtown areas, its three-axis accelerometers kick in to determine the direction and distance it has traveled since it last saw a satellite. A rudimentary map is also built in, allowing users to see where they've been, or where they've captured photos or videos more specifically.

The Exilim G series is headed up by the EX-G1 and claims the title of the thinnest toughened camera: it measures just 0.78 inches but can survive drops of 7 feet and is both dustproof as well as waterproof at depths of up to 10 feet for up to an hour. Winter travelers can also use it as it operates in temperatures as low as 14F (-10C).

Casio, Hitachi and NEC took defensive steps to protect their cellphones today and said they would merge their handset businesses into a single joint venture. The deal leaked earlier will see NEC join an existing Casio and Hitachi venture but largely take it over; NEC will have a 66 percent stake while Casio and Hitachi will have 17.3 percent and 16.7 percent respectively. All three will share their technology, production and other efforts as part of the deal.

Casio, Hitachi, NEC to merge phone business?

Three of Japan's major cellphone makers are nearing a joint venture that would create one of the largest companies of its type, sources said on Friday. Contacts for the WSJ believe Casio, Hitachi and Sharp are in talks to create a phone-only firm that would launch by April 2010. The project would be an attempt to consolidate businesses after the combination of economic fallout and a largely saturated Japanese cellphone market, where such a high percentage of residents own cellphones that handset designers are often competing for upgrades rather than new users.

Casio this morning upgraded its Exilim Zoom compacts with two new models that focus on software, not hardware. The EX-Z450 and EX-Z90 both have an Intelligent AF addition that can recognize many objects in a scene, not just humans, and automatically tune both focus and exposure to capture what it believes is the right subject. They also have a new Dynamic Photo compositing mode that can cut out a moving subject and put it in another shot by taking a single photo with a solid-hued background.
