MSI GX403 Game Notebook
MSI today updated its smallest gaming notebook by launching the GX403. The new version keeps the 14-inch display but adds a GeForce GT 130M to speed up its gaming performance without a significant energy hit. It also gets support for up to 500GB hard drives (up from 320GB). The system continues to have unique gaming touches like a highlighted W/A/S/D keyboard for first-person shooters and a Turbo Mode that overclocks the CPU when on AC power.

Asus G71Gx
Asus has expanded its line of G-series gaming notebooks with the G71Gx. The device is based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform and features the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M GPU with 1GB of DDR3 VRAM, doubling the graphics memory of the previous G71. The company also integrated three SODIMM slots, allowing configurations with up to 12GB of RAM, while a 17-inch display offers a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels.

BenQ intros Joybook S57
BenQ on Wednesday announced the release of the new Joybook S57, a media-centric notebook with a 15.6-inch, LED-backlit screen capable of a greater-than-720p (1366x768) resolution. The high-spec screen, which also has a relatively quick 8ms response time, plays movies at their native 16:9 ratio. The system is also taxed only lightly when playing HD video from the optional Blu-ray combo drive thanks to hardware decoding on an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics chipset, which also brings mid-range gaming to the notebook.

GT725 gaming notebook
MSI has released the GT725, a gaming notebook featuring the ATi Radeon HD4850 GPU with 512MB of VRAM and a 2.4GHz Intel Centrino 2 processor. ASUS P-series notebooks
At the CeBIT show currently taking place in Germany, ASUS introduced two new business-oriented notebooks, the 13.3-inch P30 and 14-inch P80, the former using Intel's new Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors, while the latter will use Centrino 2-era CPUs. The P30 on display at the show uses the 1.2GHz SU9300 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and has 4GB of RAM. Both new products have LED-backlit displays with 16:9 aspect ratios and 1366x768 resolutions that are matte, to avoid glare.

MSI X340, X600 notebooks
Ahead of an expected official debut at CeBIT at the start of May, Taiwan's MSI showed off two new X-Slim laptops, the 13.4-inch X340 and 15.6-inch X600 notebooks, revealing some of their specs. Either has an HDMI output as well as a VGA connection, with both powered by a processor based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform instead of the Atom in the X320. The X600 sports an eSATA port in addition to two USB connections.

Dell Latitude XT2
(Updated with pricing) Dell as promised has launched the Latitude XT2 as the second-generation of its convertible tablet PC. The new version comes with multi-touch support out of the box and uses pinches, swipes and other gestures to zoom and scroll through apps that support the features, such as web browsers and photo viewers. It also continues to carry a second digitizer and will work with a bundled stylus for more precise control or for drawing.

ToughBook 19 and 32 Update
Panasonic today updated its most hardened Toughbooks to make them both faster and more usable. The Toughbook 19 tablet and Toughbook 30 notebook are both based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform and use both faster and more efficient low-power Core 2 Duo processors that Panasonic estimates can get up to 10 hours on a single battery. They also get new, much brighter 1,000 nit LCDs with anti-glare, anti-reflection and circular polarizer filters that improve their viewability even in direct sunlight.

Atom N280 Due in Spring
Intel is prepping a new Atom processor whose platform will be significantly faster than any existing model, a new roadmap shows. The Atom N280 chip will only be slightly faster at 1.66GHz versus the N270's 1.6GHz but will jump the system bus from 533MHz to 667MHz, giving the chip more headroom for data. It should also introduce a much more modern integrated graphics chipset, the GN40, that brings the 3D and video features of modern Centrino 2-based notebooks to very small portables.

Lenovo IdeaCenter A600
Lenovo today abandoned its traditional business desktop focus with its first all-in-one IdeaCenter PC. The A600 is billed as a home entertainment computer and comes with a rare motion-sensitive remote similar to the Nintendo Wii remote or Gyration offerings: users can play games or otherwise control the onscreen cursor by gesturing at the PC rather than using a directional pad or mousing on a flat surface.

ASUS N20A Notebook
ASUS in a low-profile release has outed the N20A, one of the company's newest full-feature ultraportables. The 12-inch system uses the latest Centrino 2-era processors and manages to fit up to a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo into its small-profile chassis. Sprint Clearwire Approved
The FCC late yesterday approved Sprint's deal with Clearwire for a national WiMAX network. The deal will allow the two to spread an effectively unified 4G wireless Internet service across the US that should cover as many as 140 million users by the end of 2010. FCC Commissioners, including Chairman Kevin Martin, describe the approval in historic terms and suggest it will create a genuine new competitor for high-speed Internet access in the US.

ASUS intros B80A notebook
Over the weekend, ASUS introduced a new flagship notebook to its line-up, the 14.1-inch B80A. Buyers will be able to pick from a choice of four Intel Core 2 Duo processors, with clock speeds that include 2GHz, 2.16GHz, 2.4GHz, and 2.5GHz. While 1GB of RAM is standard, it can be optioned up to 4GB. The B80A will support a fast 7,200RPM SATA hard disk drive that can be found in a desktop PC, with an optional 250GB HDD. Otherwise, there are 5,400RPM SATA drives available in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB capacities. For wireless connectivity, a Draft-N Bluetooth connection is built-in.

OCZ intros 15" DIY laptops
OCZ on Thursday announced the introduction of its first 15-inch Gaming Notebook based on an Intel Centrino 2 platform. As with the company's previous DIY (Do It Yourself) products, the idea is to let users spec their own systems for their own applications. All of the new 15.4-inch, 1280x800 notebooks include an ATI Radeon HD 3650 GPU with 512MB of dedicated memory and DirectX 10.1 compatibility. There is also a choice of optical drives, ranging between a dual-layer DVD drive or a slower multi-drive that includes Blu-ray support. CPU support includes Intel's range of Core 2 Duo and Extreme processors, ranging from 2.0 GHz to 2.6GHz.

Intel/ASUS 'community' PC
Hardware makers Intel and ASUS have announced a new project, which the two companies say is designed to foster a "community-designed" PC. Through the creation of a website called WePC, the corporations say they hope to gather suggestions for the ideal qualities of a new computer, to be produced at an unspecified point in the future. Some participants are expected to be awarded prizes, but neither the prizes nor their criteria have been formalized.

Intel Mobile Updates in Q2
Intel will release a significant update to its current Montevina-era Core 2 mobile processors in the spring as a final push before the switch to Core i7 technology, according to a leaked roadmap. The chipmaker is expected to launch a 3.06GHz, regular power Core 2 Duo known as the T9900 and give users an alternative to the same-speed but more power hungry Core 2 Extreme; a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo P8800 would give users a faster, low-power (25W) alternative to the 2.53GHz model available today.

Toshiba Qosmio X305 Quad
Toshiba this morning gave the Qosmio X305 a major upgrade by updating nearly all its architecture. The 17-inch gaming system's new Q708 variant adds a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme quad-core chip and upgrades from the GeForce 9700M video hardware of before to dual GeForce 9800M GTS graphics chipsets that should provide more desktop-like 3D performance than before. Like the MacBook Pro, however, the X305 also uses a GeForce 9400M as its mainboard chipset and so is not only more space-efficient but can switch to integrated video to save power when the system isn't attached to a wall outlet.

Fujitsu LifeBook P8020
Fujitsu has quietly launched a substantial upgrade to its LifeBooks through the P8020. The ultraportable carries over the unique bezel-free 12-inch LCD of the P8010 but adds a newer, faster Centrino 2-era platform as well as one of the company's few multi-touch trackpads. Owners can perform gestures with one or two fingers, including an Apple-like pinch motion to zoom in or out as well a circular motion for uninterrupted scrolling, much as with iPods.

Gateway MC7801 Notebook
After an early introduction, Gateway today finalized details of the MC series, its first 16:9 aspect ratio notebook. The system is movie-friendly with a 16-inch, 1366x768 LCD that displays 720p video with much less wasted space than on a 16:10 display. It also takes Gateway's look somewhat upscale with either burgundy or black colors as well as the use of artificial leather and brushed metal surfaces. All models also have a backlit keyboard.

LG S210 Notebook
LG used its home country's KES 2008 show to introduce a set of new XNOTE notebooks, including the S210. The system is small and light at 12 inches and 2.2 pounds respectively but packs faster components than usually reserved for its kind, including a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo and a full 4GB of memory. Following an introduction along with Apple's new MacBook range, NVIDIA this morning formally announced the GeForce 9400M for all notebook manufacturers. Samsung Notebooks Enter US
Samsung this morning stepped up competition by jumping into the American notebook market with several models, including some of its most recent systems previously reserved only for Europe and Korea. The 13.3-inch X360 and 14.1-inch X460 headline the launch as Samsung's thinnest and lightest systems. As with the original version, the X360 is positioned against the MacBook Air with a 13.3-inch display and a slightly thicker (0.6 to 1.2 inches) body in exchange for a lighter 2.8-pound weight; it carries either a 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo, either a 120GB hard drive or 128GB solid-state drive, and full expansion that includes three USB ports, Ethernet, as well as both HDMI and VGA out.

Toshiba U405 for WiMAX
Toshiba helped kick off a special event for Sprint's Xohm service by launching its first official WiMAX-equipped notebook. The 13.3-inch Satellite U405 now has one of the 4G adapters built-in and so can pull roughly 2Mbps to 4Mbps most anywhere in Baltimore and other cities soon to get the 4G-level wireless access. Toshiba's implementation also uses Intel's "Echo Peak" adapter to include Wi-Fi without adding to the system's bulk.

An online Best Buy store listing reveals the specs and prices of Toshiba’s new, 14.1-inch Satellite-series E105 notebook. The advertised version sports a backlit keyboard, Intel’s dual-core 2.26GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. The laptop includes a 320GB hard drive and is just 1.2 inches thick while weighing in at 5lbs. Fujitsu on Wednesday has launched interchangeable color panels for its newly released 15.4-inch LifeBook A1110, which let users customize and bring life to their notebook. Thus far, three standout colors are available apart from the standard black LCD cover, including patterned blue, pink and green colors. The covers are meant to snap on and off easily and repeatedly. Apart from the colorful covers, the A1110 also features a more functional removable dust filter that traps dust and larger particles before it enters the notebook and can be removed to facilitate its cleaning.

HP dv3500t
HP on Wednesday rolled out its first 13.3-inch home user's notebook and its first more direct challenge to the same-sized MacBook and to Sony's VAIO SR. The dv3500t is one of HP's first systems outside of special editions to focus on style and comes in a unique bronze pattern that extends through to the keyboard. The company also gives it features that have either been off-limits or uncommon to the dv4t, including a dedicated 512MB GeForce 9300M GS graphics chipset as standard, a backlit keyboard and the option of an LED-backlit display for longer battery life and dropping the weight to as little as 4.1 pounds.

Toshiba intros DynaBook NX
Toshiba on Monday announced it will soon launch the DynaBook NX notebook, which will be available either with a 128GB solid-state drive or conventional 160GB hard-disk. The 12.1-inch display is LED-backlit and combines with an onboard GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset to drive HD movie playback. Thanks in part to the use of Intel‘s newer 45nm, ultra-low voltage 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, Toshiba rates the SSD-equipped dynabook‘s battery life at 11.5 hours, with the HDD model rated at 10.5 hours. Standard memory is set at 2GB but expandable to 3GB.

MacBook Pro Port Changes
Apple's anticipated MacBook Pro revision might sacrifice some of its now-traditional ports in the name of space, says a relatively new but allegedly accurate source for AppleInsider. Although Apple has included a full-sized DVI port on every 15-inch or larger notebook since a mid-cycle update to the titanium PowerBook G4, the new model is now claimed to drop this in favor of a smaller port to maximize the use of space in the system. Apple's proprietary Mini DVI adapter is described as most likely, though the company recently introduced a smaller-still alternative known as Micro DVI for the MacBook Air.

Toughbook F8 W8 and T8
Panasonic early today revamped its semi-hardened notebooks with the launch of its 8-series Toughbooks. The 14-inch F8, 12-inch W8 and the similarly-small T8 are all the first in their particular class to carry a Qualcomm Gobi chipset that gives access to 3G cellular Internet access over either EVDO or HSPA with supporting providers. Dell on Wednesday acted on its early tease and launched the Precision M6400, the company's new flagship notebook for professionals. Samsung 14.1-inch notebook
Samsung on Tuesday introduced a new notebook computer, the X460, which combines a 14.1-inch, 1280x800 LCD screen with a weight that is just under 4.2lbs. Other key specs of the X460 include a 45nm Intel Centrino 2 CPU of various processing speeds and support for up to 4GB of RAM memory. The smallest hard drive is sized at 120GB, while the largest optional HDD is 320GB in capacity. Samsung is trying to position the X460 as a stylish offering users would want to be seen with, and to this end, included a magnesium alloy casing offset with a brushed aluminum panel on the lid that is available in a choice of colors.

Sony VAIO TT
Sony this morning made official the VAIO TT, a major update to the TZ that marks a number of firsts. The ultraportable notebook is the first to carry a Blu-ray drive and burns at 2X in addition to reading the HD movie format. It's also one of the lightest at just under 2.9 pounds, Sony adds. A carbon fiber case helps reach this target, as does an LED-backlit, 11.1-inch display that the company now says produces a 100 percent color gamut while reducing the display thickness.

Sony VAIO TT Leak
Sony is gearing up to launch a likely Centrino 2-based update to its VAIO TZ ultraportable notebooks, according to evidence from an FCC filing and a string of forum posts. Called the VAIO TT, the computer would be one of the last remaining systems to launch with Sony's design update and is known to be too powerful to represent Sony's upcoming netbook; most specifications are unavailable, but the notebook will have 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional 3G access over EVDO.

Dell E4200 and E4300 Ship
Dell today at last began shipping the Latitude E4200 and E4300, its most anticipated but also most delayed notebooks from its notebook launch last month. The 12-inch E4200 is considered the MacBook Air's rival at just under 0.8 inches thick and a 2.2-pound starting weight. HP HDX16 and HDX18
After a brief absence of large notebooks, HP on Tuesday revived the HDX line with two systems that turn the focus from gaming to movies. Both the 16-inch HDX16 and 18.4-inch HDX18 are HP's first systems to use a 16:9 aspect ratio display better-suited to movies and have a built-in subwoofer, a remote and HDMI video out. Sony VAIO CS and NS
Sony today continued a spate of notebook introductions by introducing a pair of the least expensive Blu-ray capable notebooks available. The 15.4-inch VAIO NS replaces the NR and upgrades the budget notebook with options that Sony has normally reserved for its mid-range or higher systems; helped in part by newer Intel 4500 integrated graphics that help offload video decoding, the NS can be equipped with a Blu-ray combo drive while still sitting at the $1,000 mark. Sony VAIO AW More in Japan
Sony this morning gave a glimpse to Americans of future VAIO updates with the launch of a pair of new notebooks in Japan. The VAIO AW replaces the AR and has some of the same barrel-hinged design cues as the FW. Also like its smaller cousin, the AW switches from a smaller 16:10 ratio display to a larger 16:9 display, in this case moving to a new 18.4-inch, 1920x1080 panel suited to playing movies from the notebook's stock Blu-ray drive. Sony claims extreme color accuracy at 104 percent of the NTSC color gamut for the base LCD; an LED-backlit screen is even richer at 137 percent of the spectrum.

HP EliteBook 2530p 2730p
HP today added yet again to its EliteBook lineup with two new systems that push the line towards the ultra-mobile category. The 12.1-inch 2730p (shown at top) is the first convertible tablet in the line and is characterized as one of the thinnest notebooks in its class at just over 1.1 inches; though the styling is similar to the earlier Compaq 2710p, it now finds room for a full trackpad as well as separate tablet buttons and a jogwheel for fast scrolling through documents.

Lenovo ThinkPad X301
Lenovo on Monday will launch an update to its ThinkPad X300 series that shows the PC maker's second response to the MacBook Air. The X301 expands on the earlier model by using Centrino 2-era ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo processors to ramp up speed while also extending the battery life over the earlier system, which used a lower-clocked version of the same custom processor used in Apple's system. Clock speeds are unmentioned but in prior leaks will involve both 1.6GHz and 1.83GHz processors; regardless of speed, the system should perform about 20 percent faster than the original X300, Lenovo claims.

Dell today launched the new Latitude line, ushering in a significant refresh of its business systems. Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile
Intel will announce a second mobile quad-core processor when it kicks off its Developer Forum next week, according to a report. While the Santa Clara, California-based company is commonly known to be preparing a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme destined for high-end mobile workstations and gaming systems, a second model under the more mainstream Core 2 Quad name will also reportedly be available. Known under a Q9100 model name, the processor will run at a lower 2.26GHz clock speed and have its speed multiplier locked to encourage gamers to adopt the more expensive 2.53GHz part.

HP EliteBook Quad Core
HP today preceded the SIGGRAPH expo by introducing a notebook it claims breaks two records in notebooks. The 17-inch EliteBook 8730w is the first known notebook to use a true Intel mobile quad-core processor rather than repurposed desktop parts and thus has the same size and battery performance of regular 17-inch systems. The company doesn't reveal the processor but is known to be using a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme with 12MB of Level 2 cache, trading the clock speed of some Core 2 Duo processors for better performance in video encoding and other tasks that can recognize more than two cores.

HP has quietly launched a second notebook this week and now caters towards higher-end but still ultramobile users. The HP Compaq 2230s has just a 12-inch screen and weighs just over four pounds but is based entirely on Intel's just-launched Centrino 2 platform, making faster GMA 4500MHD graphics and 802.11n Wi-Fi standard features on every model. Certain trim levels also get matching processors with the faster 1,066MHz bus and range from the lower-power 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo to a full-power 2.53GHz chip.

Photos have surfaced of what is likely to be the casing for an all-aluminum 13-inch MacBook through a leak from Taiwan site Apple.pro. Coming from the same source as a MacBook Pro casing earlier in the year that has since been corroborated by outside sources, the leak shows what appears to be the lid for the new system and would confirm both the switch from plastic to metal as well as the rumored tapered edges that are reminiscent of the MacBook Air.
