Space strategy game has players conquoring planets and batting aliens
If you're a strategy game fan, chances are you're aware of 4x games, like Sid Meier's Civilization series. 4x stands for "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate," which means that the player is in control of an empire that's eager to expand. Popularized nearly three decades ago, 4x games are gaining some traction in the gaming community again, especially with players who grew up playing the genre in the 1990s. Because of this, titles like Galactic Civilizations II and Civilization V have seen some decent success. We checked out StarDrive 2, a space-themed 4x that has players expanding their empire across the vast reaches of space.
Civilization V adds support for the new Mac Pro, 4K resolution
Aspyr has released a new update for Civilization V, aimed at improving its performance on the newest Mac Pro. Allowing for 4K resolutions on supporting monitors while running into fewer crashes, Mac games that use the Mac Pro will now be able to take advantage of the machine's second video card. The updated game will automatically download and install for Steam users, and Mac app-version users can grab the update from the App Store. Civilization V and all of its DLC and expansions are currently 50 percent off, until March 27.
Add-on gives added depth, choices for endgame
Ever since the first Civilization title shipped on a pair of floppy disks in the early '90s, the series has been a staple on the PC and Macintosh. Late in 2013, Firaxis helmed by Sid Meier pushed out the second major expansion to Civilization V, called Brave New World. With the game itself a few years old and the expansion costing more than the base game itself now does, is the expansion a worthwhile addition to the series, or more of the same?
