NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M hits mid-range

NVIDIA was the first to start off its Computex unveilings in earnest late Sunday by launching two notebook graphics chipsets and 3D glasses. The GeForce GTX 560M headlines the group and is designed to bring high-end gaming to moderately sized notebooks without hurting battery life. Its 192 processing cores, 192-bit memory bus, and 775MHz core clock speed give it enough speed to play games at 1080p, but as the first design with Optimus live graphics switching from major PC builders, it should still provide reasonable battery life by dropping to Intel video with less demanding tasks.

Systems automatically switch to discrete graphics

Taiwanese notebook maker Clevo has introduced two new models, the B5100M and B7110M, featuring NVIDIA's Optimus technology. Both notebooks combine integrated Intel graphics with GeForce GT 330M 1GB components, while the Optimus system automatically switches to the discrete chip when higher performance is needed.

Alex PC in the UK gets broadband, ease-of-use

The UK's Broadband Computer Company is going after a niche market of computer users with an easy-to-use 15.4-inch notebook called Alex. Meant for users who don't know how to, don't want to learn or don't want to bother learning how to use a computer, Alex is a rebranded Clevo M760T notebook with a 1.66GHz Celeron CPU and 1GB of RAM. Users log into a custom, Linux-based OS by inserting a USB drive BCC calls a latchkey and typing in a password. The idea gives each member of the family their own latchkey for logging in and accessing their own files.

ASUS G51J 3D also has Core i7

ASUS today officially took the wraps from the first notebook to use NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision. The G51J 3D uses both NVIDIA's special glasses and a 120Hz LCD to add spatial depth to games that support it, such as Arkham Asylum and Borderlands. The combination of a 1.6GHz Core i7 and a GeForce GTX 260M help run the games at the 15.6-inch notebook's native 1366x768 resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce 160M

NVIDIA's turn at CeBIT on Tuesday saw the company launch four new mobile graphics chips, including new models for thin notebooks. At the top of the range are the GeForce GTX 260M and GTX 280M. Both are updated versions of the 9800M series and use manufacturing refinements to run up to 50 percent faster than the outgoing models without consuming more energy. Both also support SLI for twin graphics hardware as well as Hybrid SLI to switch to integrated graphics in battery-saving situations.

Clevo D900F specs revealed

The high-end Clevo D900F notebook first mentioned late last year and expected to launch early this year has been delayed until May, but specs for the Intel Core i7-powered notebook are now available. Clevo importer Eurocom has posted the specs on the high-performance 17-inch notebook, which is expected to be the world's first to offer the combination of a choice of the new chips, RAID 0/1/5 hard drive arrays and the as yet unannounced NVIDIA G280 graphics processor. The GPU will reportedly be released this summer.

Clevo intros new notebooks

Taiwanese PC maker Clevo on Tuesday announced a number of new notebook PCs it will display at the CeBIT show at the start of March. The company will also launch its first netbook entry, the 7-inch convertible tablet TN70M, equipped with a 1024x600 touchscreen. The device will use an Intel Atom Z-series chip along with built-in Wi-Fi and GPS functionality. Tipping the scales at just over 2lbs, users will also get an ExpressCard slot and six hours of battery life with Wi-Fi web browsing. The netbook will have a passive cooling design and not use noisy and power-sapping fans.

Clevo M98 gaming notebook

Taiwanese notebook manufacturer Clevo will replace its current flagship notebook, the 17.1-inch D901C, with the one pictured, code-named M98 NU, according to a recent report. The new computer will bring improvements with it, including a larger, 18.4-inch LCD display with 1920x1080 HD resolution and support for Intel's Core 2 quad-core processors. Graphics will be handled by NVIDIA's MCP79 chipset with an integrated GPU, though it will have SLI support, capable of working in conjunction with high-end NVIDIA products such as the 9800M GTX.
