Gmail update for iOS adds background mail retrieval, simplified sign-in
Google's email service Gmail has received an update for its iOS app. The newly redesigned app provides real-time notifications, multiple account support and search across one's entire inbox. In v3.0, Gmail now includes background app refreshing, meaning that email is fully downloaded and retrieved as it arrives in one's inbox, as opposed to syncing only when the app is opened. Sign-in has been simplified, with consolidated authorization with all Google apps now enabled. Gmail for iOS now requires iOS 7 for all features to function.
CodeWeavers makes CrossOver free for a Halloween treat
CodeWeavers has unveiled its Halloween plan to give away virtualization software for free. From 12:01 AM through 11:59 PM Central Daylight Time on October 31, the company will be offering a free one-year license to Crossover Mac or Crossover Linux at the Flock the Vote promotional website. Existing customers will get a 12-month extension added to their support agreement.
New graphics routines to blame, solution for problem announced
[Updated with discussion of problem and Codeweavers update information] According to an announcement post on the Codeweavers support forum, virtualization application Crossover fails to operate under recently-released OS X versions 10.8.2 and 10.7.5. Crossover reports that the bug "prevents CrossOver from operating any application that uses 3D functions" and that it is "working with Apple on this issue and we hope to resolve it rapidly."
'Flock the vote' campaign promises free CrossOver for 100,000 pledges
Macintosh developer Codeweavers has initiated a drive to convince Americans to register to vote. If 100,000 Americans pledge to vote in the upcoming 2012 Presidential election, CodeWeavers CrossOver Windows application compatibility wrapper software for OS X or Linux will be freely downloadable for 24 hours, giving downloaders a 12-month support entitlement. Prospective voters can pledge at Codeweavers' website, and register for further updates.
CodeWeavers has released an update to its Windows virtualization software, CrossOver Mac 8.0. The latest version now supports a number of new programs including Internet Explorer 7 and Quicken 2009. Performance has been improved while running Microsoft Office 2007, particularly with Outlook. The company attributes a significant portion of the expanded compatibility to the growing Wine Project, an initiative that is working to allow Windows-coded programs to work on other operating systems.
CodeWeavers today unveiled CrossOver Games, a new optimized version to its Windows virtualization software designed to function exclusively with games. The software is already compatible with a number of different Windows game titles, such as World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Team Fortress 2, Counterstrike, and Civilization 4, among others. CrossOver Games is available for both Mac and Linux platforms for $40, which includes one year of support and updates.
