SDG Systems on Thursday announced it has made Google's Android 1.5 operating system available on its Trimble Nomad rugged handheld PC. This will allow developers to test Android applications on the device, which can be optioned up with a quad-band GSM and EDGE data radio for making and receiving phone calls. Android 1.5 includes the Cupcake updates that adds a virtual keyboard and lets users view running third party applications from the regular applications list, among other changes. Previously, Trimble Nomad was offered only with Linux or Windows Mobile 6.0 software.

T-Mobile in the UK said it will launch the Cupcake update for the Google-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1, in April, according to a Wednesday report. The Cupcake release may coincide with that of Vodafone's HTC Magic, the successor to the G1, though T-Mobile UK is keeping mum about this possibility. "We can't say whether this will be connected with the launch of the HTC Magic as we aren't aware of what alterations if any they are making to the operating system," a T-Mobile rep says.

Vodafone Magic in April

UK wireless provider Vodafone has recently posted that the Android-powered HTC Magic, a successor to the original T-Mobile G1, will be available at the carrier next month. Word of the Magic coming to Vodafone first appeared over two weeks ago but preceded the official launch and didn't include specifics.

Android Cupcake update

The Android updates that are soon due to come to the T-Mobile G1 handset over the air have been detailed on Thursday. The updates, collectively dubbed Cupcake by the Android team, include a new local setting page that lets users select different locales and various ways of inputting text. Users will also get the option of viewing running third party applications from the regular applications list.
