Operator of Currys PC World joins up with Carphone Warehouse

Two high street store chains in the United Kingdom are merging, it has been revealed. Dixons Retail, operator of over 500 Currys PC World electronics stores in the country, will join up with Carphone Warehouse, a store chain specializing in mobile phones with more than 2,000 stores across Europe, with the deal said to be worth £3.8 billion ($6.3 billion).

Apple confirmed late Monday to AllThingsD that it had obtained a key executive from United Continental. The airline's CFO, Zane Rowe, had left to become a sales VP at Apple. Company representative Steve Dowling was short on details, but pointed to what it saw as a good track record with Rowe.

Apple takes UK tech retail veteran as Senior VP

Apple chose early Tuesday to reveal that it had persuaded the CEO of UK retailer Dixons, John Browett, to become its Senior VP for retail. The shift will fill the vacuum left since June, when Ron Johnson left to become the CEO of JC Penney. Apple CEO Tim Cook described the decision to hire the overseer of chains such as Currys and PC World as a reaction to having met Browett and his reputed focus on the customer.

Motorola has confirmed to Engadget that its Xoom tablet will begin shipping in the UK next week. Despite this, however, prices or an exact date haven't been revealed. The Android 3.0 tablet will arrive at electronics retailers Carphone Warehouse, Currys, Dixons, and PC World.

Galaxy Tab Euro price drops to compete with Apple

European pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab has plunged in the past couple of days in what might be a sign of early trouble for the Android tablet. In the UK, the cost of the Galaxy Tab has dropped from an already partly reduced 700 ($1,109) to 470 ($745) at major portals such as Amazon and Dixons. French pricing remains unchanged, but Amazon Germany has also dropped its pricing to about 638 euros ($859).

Toshiba Folio 100 pulled from UK sales after bugs

Toshiba's entry into Android tablets hit a major setback today as UK retailers have stopped sales of the Folio 100. A set of leaks of company memos from Dixons chain stores Currys and PC World have shown that both are freezing sales after a "high return rate" for multiple issues. Shops have pulled it off their websites and deliberately boosted the price to 999 ($1,613) to deter customers from asking about a sale.

Samsung Galaxy Tab priced well over iPad in UK

Samsung's Galaxy Tab today received official UK pricing from retailers that puts it well above the iPad. Dixons, PC World and other stores should carry the low-end seven-inch tablet for 600 with tax, or $950. The cost comes despite the larger Apple tablet costing 529 ($838) for a model with the same 3G and 16GB of storage.

Galaxy Tab to ship in the UK on November 1

Samsung Mobile on Friday announced that it will officially begin shipping its Galaxy Tab in UK stores on November 1. This includes Carphone Warehouse, Dixons Store Group and T-Mobile. Although Samsung hasn't announced pricing information, it did say the device will be available on a number of plans and therefore prices. The seven-inch slate will ship with Android 2.2, sport a 1GHz CPU and have both back- and front-facing camera.
