Adobe releases Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements 13

Launches Elements Live portal for online learning, tips and tricks

On Tuesday, Adobe released major upgrades to its two consumer-oriented "Elements" programs -- the image-editing program Photoshop Elements, and the video-editing program Premiere Elements, now both at version 13. In addition, both programs now feature a new help and instruction portal called Elements Live that offers various tips, tricks and tutorials on using the programs. Both programs boast several new features.

Not part of Creative Cloud, consumer apps gain features

Consumer photo- and video-editing suites Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements have been updated by Adobe to version 12, adding new "guided edits" and a new technology called "auto smart tone" that in both programs learns the users usual edits and creates a preset out of them. Unlike the company's "Creative Cloud" software, both Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements have remained standalone product sold on DVDs with "perpetual" licenses. Both programs have also added other features unique to each package.

Adobe holds holiday sale, cuts prices on Elements line

Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements slashed for sale

Over the weekend, Adobe revealed its second sale this holiday season for image editing software Photoshop Elements 11, movie creator Premiere Elements 11, and photo archival tool Lightroom 4. The sale runs through January 6. Lightroom 4 has been reduced to $130, from the original retail of $149. Both Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 have been cut to $80, from $99. A bundle consisting of both Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 is $99.

Archos has detailed its 2012 tablet lineup, which includes several Elements tablets and the G10xs model that aims to compete with the iPad. The G10 features a 7.6mm-thick steel housing, shaving nearly 2mm from the iPad's thickness.

Microsoft wants to patent GPU video encoding

A US patent filing published today has raised concerns as it could give Microsoft control of hardware-accelerated video encoding. A continuance of an application for "accelerated video encoding using a graphics processing unit" would cover the common technique of calculating motion for video processing with the video chipset in a computer rather than the regular, usually slower main CPU. Its techniques are broad and cover tricks like turning each frame into macroblocks to process them in parallel.

AKVIS Sketch 10 update adds Snow Leopard support

AKVIS has introduced a new version of one of its photo effects apps, Sketch 10. The software converts photos into simulated watercolors and pencil drawings. The upgrade provides a new effects tool called Stroke Direction, which offers control over hatch direction and enhances realism. Three new presets have also been added, along with support for Snow Leopard and Windows 7.

Software attemps to simplify photo processing

onOne has published Photo Essentials 3, an updated version of its extension for Photoshop Elements. The add-on attempts to simplify certain tasks in Adobe's software, such as color correction, framing, enlargements and background removal. The latest edition introduces Make It Cool, a module which applies effects from a list of over 40, including sepia toning and simulated HDR (high dynamic range).

Kit adds layers, masking, more tools to Elements 8

Andrei Doubrovski has released an enhancement patch, Elements+ 1.0, for Adobe's Photoshop Elements 8.0 software. The patch unlocks a number of advanced functions and makes them available in dedicated dialog boxes. The kit adds eight dialog boxes, including color and tone, selections, layers, masks, smart filters, paths, test and scripts. The scripts dialog box provides many features of the actions palate from the full Photoshop application.

Genuine Fractals 6 adds batch processing, tiling

onOne has released the latest version of its image resizing plug-in, Genuine Fractals 6. The update now allows tiling for smaller printers and batch processing. A gallery wrap function has been added, along with support for Adobe Photoshop CS4, Elements, Lightroom 2 and Apple Aperture 2.1. The company claims that its fractal-based interpolation algorithms allow image sizes to be increased by 1000 percent without losing sharpness or detail. The utility also allows images to be cropped to fit a variety of common document sizes.

Adobe on Tuesday unveiled Photoshop Elements 7, and Premiere Elements 7, two major version upgrades to its consumer photo and video editing applications, including Photoshop.com memberships with either app. Photoshop Elements 7 introduces several new tools and utilities, including several one-step Quick Fix tools. Quick Fix allows users to remedy common problems with sky color, or teeth whitening, while the Smart Brush can quickly improve lighting, add textures, or apply over fifty effects to a specific area.

Adobe today unveiled Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac, a major update to its simplified photo editing software. The new version introduces many new features, such as a “group merge” tool that allows users to pick the best facial expressions and body language from a series of shots, combining them into a master image. Photoshop Elements 6 provides users with three editing modes, tuned for different levels of experience; the new Guided Edit mode walks beginners through various image improvement steps, for example. Adobe will ship Photoshop Elements 6 early in the second quarter of 2008 for $90, and will be showing the software at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
