HP unveils Open webOS, makes code swap to allow more devices

HP Open webOS ready by September with common Linux

HP has acted on its promise to open-source webOS with an important change that could affect the devices that use it. Now called Open webOS, it's moving to a common Linux kernel that will let hardware makers use much more typical drivers and bring it to hardware beyond what HP originally intended. The OS will sit under an Apache 2 license, which will let others copy code as long as they include the license and attribution.

HP TouchPad, webOS 3 to run legacy apps

HP developer Ben Combee promised late Thursday that the TouchPad would run older webOS apps. The tablet and any other webOS 3.0 devices would run apps built in the old Mojo kit as-is, with an onscreen gesture space to make up for a small app running on the much larger screen. They won't scale up, however.

Palm's Enyo framework to allow tablets, high-end phone apps

Palm previews Enyo platform for tablets at Dev Day

HP and Palm's Joe Hayashi at the Palm Developer Day this Saturday provided some of the first details of the developer platform that will support a slew of new webOS devices next year. The Enyo framework will replace Mojo and is built to support different designs beyond the mix of touchscreen and physical keyboard, such as full-touch phones and tablets like the PalmPad. The JavaScript code underneath should run faster and will be more modular to help fix bugs and add new features sooner than before.
