Sony reveals Exmor RS camera sensor for smartphones

Stacked sensor capable of HDR video recording

Sony has formally unveiled it stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones. Last seen in January, the Exmor RS camera modules boast a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor which stacks the pixel layer over the signal ship, shrinking the module's size. The two layers being independent of each other, combined with the pixel layer and analog logic chip not having to compete for space, promises improved image quality compared to previous methods.

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S speeds up key model

Sony Ericsson used the start of IFA to bring out a rare mid-cycle revamp of a key smartphone. The Xperia arc S upgrades to a faster 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor. Although still single-core, the chip is estimated to give the slim Android 2.3 phone a 25 percent overall speed boost, including the camera start up and web rendering.

Sony rolls out second-gen NEX-VG20 swappable-lens camcorder

Second-gen NEX-VG20 camcorder gets 16.1MP sensor

As expected, Sony on Wednesday revealed its second-generation swappable-lens camcorder with the NEX-VG20E. It replaces the current and one-year old NEX-VG10 and sports manual controls for consumer-level videographers. The megapixel count of the Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor grows from 14.2 to 16.1, with RAW photos an option alongside JPEG.

Sony TX55 thinnest camera with built-in IS

Sony upgraded its Cyber-shots Monday with three new models. The TX55 is its highlight and is billed as the thinnest point-and-shoot camera with built-in optical stabilization, at about 0.48 inches deep. The camera still focuses on image quality by using Sony's first 16.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, which should help in low light even at the higher resolution.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc reaches US

Sony Ericsson on Thursday quietly brought the Xperia Arc to the US through an unlocked version at Sony's online store. The Android 2.3 headliner we first tried at CES is identical to the one sold in Canada and has its support for AT&T-friendly 3G, just derestricted to work with any GSM carrier. T-Mobile USA users can use the phone but will be stuck using 2G.

Sony VAIO Z21 revealed in store listings

Four store listings at Italian online shop F2F (one, two, three, four) have slipped out Sony's plans for an upgraded VAIO Z in Europe. All of them will use Sandy Bridge-era Core processors, very fast SSD storage, fingerprint readers, and built-in 3G. The HDMI has been upgraded to put out 3D video, and the webcam has been given a lift to use the low-light Exmor sensor technology from other camera-equipped Sony gear.

Sony shows new high-end HD camcorders for Japan

Sony has just introduced a pair of camcorders, including a professional variant of its NEX-VG10 with the NEX-FS100JK. There is also the more affordable and more compact HXR-NX70J. Both belong to Sony's NXCAM range but only the former's lenses are swappable.

Sony preps ultra-fast 17.7MP phone camera

Sony 17.7MP phone camera hits 120FPS

Sony late Thursday said it had developed a small, phone-sized 17.7-megapixel camera sensor that would overcome much of the performance bottlenecks of earlier technology. The technique, described by Nikkei [reg. required], can process several pixels' input in parallel and takes up to 75 percent less time to generate the final image. At 34.8Gbps of bandwidth, it's about five times faster than a typical phone camera and can handle burst photography or high-speed video that wouldn't have been an option before.
