Taiwan hints iPad only having mild carrier effect
Carriers in Taiwan aren't yet feeling a significant pinch from the iPad and other tablets on their netbook sales, those in the island's telecom industry said Thursday. Subsidized netbook sales only dipped slightly in November, to 14,000 computers from a peak near 16,000. It came despite the iPad having been on sale for months and some carriers, like Far EasTone, selling devices like the ViewSonic ViewPad, Digitimes said.

BenQ MID S6 with Win XP
BenQ on Friday revealed that it was launching a version of its MID S6 with Windows XP in its native Taiwan. The Mobile Internet Device is being launched in tandem with Far EasTone and not only replaces BenQ's custom Linux interface with the Microsoft OS but takes advantage of the built-in 3G as well: besides mobile data beyond the built-in Wi-Fi, it also lands built-in VoIP. Hardware is slightly modernized with an 800MHz Atom Z500 and an 8GB SSD giving it better performance and storage for the more resource-heavy OS.

Acer Android devices
In addition to working on a smartphone running on the Android operating system due for a fall release, Acer is also working on a number of other Android devices, according to a Wednesday report. The executive noted that the company was trying out Android on many "different solutions" but stopped short of committing to any particular device types, including Acer's defining netbook line.

ECS to supply Nokia
Taiwanese Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) may supply Nokia with its first netbook products, as the two companies are reported by DigiTimes on Monday to be in talks regarding the matter. A Chinese daily newspaper, the Economic Daily News, cites sources at ECS that maintain the talks will conclude this quarter.
