Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable reaches 1.5TB
Seagate this morning reached another record for storage with a 1.5TB version of the FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable drive. It ships with a USB 3.0 cable that gives it a theoretical 5Gbps peak speed, and as a GoFlex drive it can switch to FireWire 800 or another high-speed format.

We review Seagate GoFlex 3TB Drive, Net, TV
Seagate has been synonymous with storage for decades, but it has often followed a relatively conservative path. GoFlex changes that; it promises to keep external hard drives almost futureproof by making the ports as removable as the drives themselves. With that in mind, we've made a comprehensive review of the main GoFlex lineup, including the GoFlex TV media hub, GoFlex Net network-attached storage hub, and the range-topping 3TB GoFlex Desk external drive.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk hits 3TB
Seagate claimed a record in storage today by launching a 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk drive. The first of its kind packs a single, 3TB disk inside and is large enough to need a 64-bit OS to work: it needs either Mac OS X Snow Leopard and either Windows 7 or Vista in their 64-bit versions to see more than the 2.1TB inherent to drives on most 32-bit platforms. Windows XP may not be usable at all.

Seagate GoFlex drives, media hub debut
Seagate tonight overhauled its entire external hard drive line in a way that renders them much more future proof. GoFlex supports USB 2.0 natively but has a unique cable system that adapts the drives to different standards or features. A drive could be upgraded to USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 just by getting the relevant adapter; an automatic backup cable can turn the drive into a backup system without needing more elaborate hardware.

Every drive also spins at 7,200RPM and behaves more like a 3.5-inch drive in spite of its size. 250GB, 320GB and 500GB models ship this month at prices of $130, $150 and $190 respectively.

640GB FreeAgent Go Slips
Seagate today inadvertently spoiled its plans by posting a product page for a 640GB FreeAgent Go. The drive would represent one of the first 2.5-inch external drives to break the 500GB ceiling; differences aren't evident except for in color, where the 640GB disk will only come in black or silver instead of the several colors available with the smaller capacities.

The FreeAgent Go (pictured) and Go for Mac are both claimed as the thinnest notebook-sized drives at 12.5mm (just under 0.5in) but also have an optional dock that cradles the drive at home, simplifying the process of porting the drive outside of the home. The Mac edition also switches from USB to a rare FireWire 400/800 interface and is pre-formatted for the HFS+ file system out of the box.
