Compatibility issues limit function

An amateur programmer claims to have adapted Android 3.0 to run on the original original Android phones, the T-Mobile G1 and HTC Magic. The programmer claims that the "full" Honeycomb UI, the ability to run apps, and several advanced features are working. Several of the most common smartphone functions do not work, such as 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, and SMS and MMS messaging.

T-Mobile G2 to be next major Google phone

T-Mobile today confirmed the existence of just its second halo Android phone today with a teaser page for the T-Mobile G2. The company didn't provide significantly more details but confirmed it would also be the first HSPA+ device on its network and an official "with Google" device. It's implied that the phone will use stock Android rather than T-Mobile's myTouch layer.

T-Mboile G1 now in white

T-Mobile has announced on Wednesday that the T-Mobile G1 handset will now be available in a new color, white, adding to the currently available G1 in black or bronze. It will be priced at the same $179 with a two year contract as the other two handsets. Like the other handsets, the white G1 will support T-Mobile's HSDPA- or UMTS-based 3G service a full HTML web browser to take advantage of the fast data network or its built-in Wi-Fi connection.


Garmin Nuvifone still on track for 2009 launch

Garmin Nuvifone due for 09

Portable navigation device maker Garmin said on Wednesday its delayed nuvifone handset is still on track for a 2009 release. The GPS-enabled phone should launch in the first half of 2009, with Garmin announcing it has already signed letters of intent with carriers, but did not provide other launch details. The nuvifone was originally due for a summer 2008 release and feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen as well as 3G HSPA network support. Garmin did post third-quarter earnings ahead of Wall Street's expectations but is below those expectations for all of 2008 to date.


T-Mobile G1 pre-orders coming as early as Friday

T-Mobile G1 arrives Friday

A Wednesday report reveals T-Mobile customers who pre-ordered the T-Mobile G1 may get their Android-based smartphone as early as Friday, October 17th. The report cites two customers who have checked their UPS tracking number online and have been told T-Mobile is shipping the G1 on a 3-day service, pegging the arrival date at this Friday, ahead of the in-store release date of October 21st.

T-Mobile kills G1 data cap

After a public outcry, T-Mobile is reconsidering its stance on the 1GB data cap for the upcoming Android-based G1, and will only focus on users who repeatedly abuse their data connections. Engadget reveals that the move comes in response to protests against the limitations which were published on Tuesday, which would limit users' download speeds to 50Kbps should they pass a 1GB data cap. T-Mobile hopes the decision will sate users' expectations for the new device.


BlackBerry Storm to be official next week?

Verizon's BlackBerry Storm launch could take place as early as next week, the company hints in a pre-release campaign sheet. The provider is reputedly set to start the public side of its marketing campaign on the 22nd for business customers and will reach out to a wider audience on October 1st. The details would also suggest a complete launch as soon as November 1st and cast doubt on a rumor of a multi-week delay.
