Modernizing 2500 cell sites by end of July

T-Mobile has detailed its network improvement plans, including LTE rollout for 2013. The carrier is preparing to modernize 37,000 cell sites, including several thousand to be revamped this summer. Additional HSPA+ expansion will occur ahead of LTE trials this summer, before the company formally deploys LTE service next year.

Qualcomm ships LTE-equipped Gobi 4000 for 4G notebooks

Platform provides high-speed 4G LTE connectivity

Qualcomm has announced the availability of its newest platform for embedded wireless connectivity, the Gobi 4000. The fourth generation Gobi Platform provides 4G LTE connectivity for notebooks and other mobile devices. The 4000 platform is based on the company's MDM9600 and MDM9200 multi-mode 3G/4G wireless modems.

Verizon's first LTE QWERTY slider

Although Samsung's Nexus Prime did not make a showing today at CTIA in San Diego, the company did bring along its Stratosphere handset that will be headed to Verizon. Electronista had a chance to take an early look at the upcoming handset. The device bears a close resemblance to the WiMAX-equipped Epic 4G that is currently offered through Sprint.

Leaks back HTC, LG, Samsung 42Mbps smartphones for T-Mobile

Taiwanese sources claim 42Mbps en route

Taiwanese industry sources have revealed that HTC, LG and Samsung are expected to deliver HSPA+ 42Mbps-enabled smartphones compatible with T-Mobile’s network. The new high-speed devices will launch in the second half of this year and will mark the first time handsets with this capability have been released. To date, devices that are compatible with the 4G technology have been limited to mobile data cards or mobile routers.

HP using Mini Coopers to sell Veer 4G

Suggests AT&T hyping HSPA+ 3G as 4G

Two Mini Coopers adorned with ads for the HP Veer were spotted recently in Los Angeles, and came with a surprise: labeling the Veer as a 4G handset. Introduced at the February 2011 webOS show, the Veer uses HSPA+ 3G for broadband connectivity and is expected to be available on the AT&T network. If the device has been renamed as the Veer 4G, it may suggest that the carrier is pushing to have HSPA+ considered as a 4G standard.

AT&T unveils LTE and HSPA+ USB modems

AT&T has unveiled its first USB modems designed to work with LTE and HSPA+ networks. The USBConnect Shockwave, built by Sierra, represents the carrier's first HSPA+ modem, while the Shockwave, manufactured by LG, is its first to offer future upgradeability to LTE.

HTC smartphone with HSPA+ due in September?

Android-powered HTC phone with HSPA+ coming?

A T-Mobile spokesperson on Wednesday reportedly said HTC will have an Android-based phone supporting the carrier's HSPA+ network. While few details are known, the technology would give it a much faster peak speed of 21Mbps and could mean realistic download speeds of about 10Mbps. Upload speeds would reach into the multi-megabit range as well.

T-Mobile has announced ongoing expansion of its HSPA+ network which brings faster 3G data speeds for subscribers. The company's HSPA+ network has been broadened in the New York City metropolitan area, including New Jersey and Long Island, along with other New York Cities such as Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

Ericsson's 56Mbps HSPA+ speed breaks world record

Ericsson shows 56Mbps HSPA

Ericsson announced on Tuesday that it will demonstrate HSPA data speeds as fast as 56Mbps at the CTIA Wireless convention, which kicks off on Wednesday. The speeds should double those of 28Mbps-capable networks launching in North America, Germany and Italy. At Mobile World Congress in February, Ericsson successfully demonstrated speeds in a similar network operating at a peak of 42Mbps. The next step in the evolution of the HSPA technology, dubbed HSPA+, involves the use of a combination of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-carrier HSPA technology.

Qualcomm today said it would be the first company to produce chipsets capable of supporting multiple 4G Internet standards. Three of its chipsets will now not only support the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard that will be used many larger world carriers but also competing and bridging standards: the top two chipsets, the MDM9600 and MDM 9800, will support the upcoming EVDO Rev. B and Ultra-Mobile Broadband (UMB) standards for CDMA networks even as they support LTE networks once they appear. Each will be powerful enough to handle downloads as quick as 50Mbps and uploads as fast as 25Mbps, Qualcomm says.

ATT 3G Expansion in 2008

AT&T today said it would rapidly expand its third-generation (3G) cellular data network over the course of 2008, greatly improving coverage of the relatively fledgling service. The carrier intends to introduce its HSPA-based Internet access to 80 new cities throughout the year to include a total of 350 areas. Many if not all of these current and future areas will be upgraded to use the faster HSUPA (High Speed Upload Packet Access) format, AT&T adds. Practical speeds for these networks are estimated to range between 600Kbps and 1.4Mbps with downloads and between 500Kbps and 800Kbps for uploads, enabling video uploads as well as more two-way Internet features.
