Improprieties, difference between US, EU accounting to be evaluated

The US Department of Justice has commenced an investigation into reports of accounting fraud at Hewlett-Packard's troubled acquisition, Autonomy. In November, HP had made its own discovery of potential fraud at the software developer, and submitted evidence to federal regulators following a write-down of $8 billion of the value of the company, for which it paid $11 billion a little over a year ago.

Less than 24 hours after a judge refused to rule before trial, an Oracle Corp attorney dismissed the possibility of a settlement with Hewlett-Packard out of hand. HP is seeking $4 billion in damages from Oracle's decision to discontinue Itanium support in the product lineup.

California forges agreements with tech firms on app privacy

Apple, Google, Microsoft among groups with deals

California's Office of the Attorney General has secured agreements from several major corporations on improving privacy in mobile apps, according to a spokesman. Under the terms of the arrangement the companies will ask developers to include privacy policies for apps, informing users before a download what an app will access, as well as what will be done with the data. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Hewlett-Packard, and Research in Motion have signed on.

Foxconn Technology Group of Taiwan, one of the principle manufacturers of high-tech devices for companies such as Apple and Hewlett-Packard, is responding to demand by seeking to invest up to $10 billion in a new factory in the Chinese city of Chengdu, Reuters has reported.

Hewlett-Packard has been accused of violating customs laws in India, according to a Businessweek report. The local Directorate of Revenue Intelligence claims the company has evaded $323 million in customs duties by underpricing imports.

Apple, HP, Dell laptop owners sue Nvidia

Nvidia sued over graphics

Five owners of Apple, Dell and Hewlett-Packard laptops have combined their lawsuits against Nvidia in an attempt to make the company replace allegedly flawed processors, according to court documents. The five plaintiffs filed an amended complaint last week in San Francisco federal court that accused Nvidia of violating the consumer-protection laws. According to one plaintiff Todd Feinstein of Louisiana, after purchasing his MacBook in April 2008, the computer ran hot, periodically shut-down without warning and displayed only grey or black at times.

HP launches 15.6-inch notebook without fanfare

HP intros 15.6-in notebook

An online Circuit City sales listing shows Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new notebook that is already on sale. The HP G60-120US is built around a 15.6-inch widescreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio that’s good for 1366x768 resolution. For processing power, the new notebook sports AMD’s Turion 64 X2 processor rated at 2.0GHz along with 3GB of DDR2 memory. NVIDIA’s GeForce 8200M integrated video card performs video processing duties. The 250GB hard drive will come pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and a DVD burner is standard fare.
