Microsoft announces end of Hohm on May 31, 2012

Microsoft on Thursday announced an end date for its Hohm beta service. The home energy monitoring and management service will continue to operate until May 31, 2012 at which time it will no longer be accessible. The software giant cites poor market adoption rates for the free service.

Microsoft PowerCost Monitor sends power use to PCs

Microsoft dipped into actual hardware involvement for its Hohm service by teaming with Blue Line on an update to the PowerCost Monitor. The power meter can now link into Microsoft's Hohm energy saving system and includes a Wi-Fi Gateway that clamps on to the power meter; data sent from the meter can reach the local network and upload usage to Hohm for access on a computer. The approach makes it easier to gauge usage habits and identify if a particular device is using too much power.

Microsoft to shelve OneApp project?

Microsoft's OneApp project introduced about a year ago may not take off the ground, following in the footsteps of the Kin handsets. OneApp, which would see feature phones receiving an app store and running these apps in markets that include developing countries, was tested in South Africa and in other markets but no future plans were announced for it. According to a Thursday CNET report, Microsoft said it remains "excited about the potential of the OneApp technology and [will] continue to evolve its strategy."

Ford to use Microsoft's Hohm car charging app

Ford, Microsoft team-up on Hohm energy app

Microsoft and Ford early on Wednesday announced that Ford will be the first to use Microsoft's Hohm energy management app for its electric vehicles. The first vehicle in Ford's stable to take advantage of the technology will the Focus Electric in 2011. Hohm will assist owners on when and how to most efficiently recharge their battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), so as to put the least amount of burden on the electrical grid.
