Kootol sends notice to Apple on messaging patent
Unknown software house Kootol on Friday sent notice to many companies claiming that they allegedly violate a messaging patent. It targets a wide swath of the industry that includes Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Foursquare, Microsoft, Nokia, RIM, Twitter, and others all allegedly violate a patent for "Method and System for Communication, Advertising, Searching, Sharing and Dynamically Providing a Journal Feed." Unusually, Kootol doesn't actually have the patent and is instead acting on a Notice of Allowance that lets it act on the patent but still requires that it pay for the patent later.

Twitterrific 3.1 released
The Iconfactory has announced the release of Twitterrific 3.1, an update to the application that enables users to both read and publish posts or 'tweets' to the Twitter community website. The latest release hides the cursor after selecting a tweet, correctly sorts as well as summarizes Growl notifications, adds a preference to control the scrolling of tweets in the window, and includes new keyboard shortcuts. The update also no longer allows the reply shortcut on a direct message, and a new power user preference optionally displays @screenname rather than a full name. Twitterific 3.1 is available for free, and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later as well as a Twitter account.

Arcade Daze System
Iconfactory today relesed Arcade Daze System for CandyBar, a freeware icon collection designed to spice up the look of the trash can as well as folders and files. The icon set includes more than 130 system replacement icons, which can replace everything on the desktop as well as various other folders, files, and hard drive icons. Arcade Daze System is available for free for personal use, and works with the CandyBar icon organization utility.

Leopard-only CandyBar 3
Panic and IconFactory recently introduced CandyBar 3.0, created exclusively for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and announced that Pixadex – IconFactory's icon organization app – has been rolled into the latest CandyBar update. The update allows users to change the look of the Leopard dock by dragging and dropping new images from the Finder, and even includes support for specially marked iContainers that provide replaceable Dock themes. Panic is offering a free upgrade to CandyBar 2 and Pixadex 2 users who purchased either product after October 1st, 2007, as well as upgrade discounts to users who bought before that date. CandyBar 3.0 is available from Panic's website for $30.
